Patriotic Pins

17-580 REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC PIN - LEIB-GRENADIER-REGIMENT Nr 8 - PRUSSIA. This is a simply superb patriotic regimental pin for a very elite Prussian regiment. This regiment is unique among Prussian regiments, because it had a special, one-of-a-kind designation. While various types of infantry regiments existed within the Prussian Army (Füsilier, Grenadier, Fuß, and Infanterie), they primarily fell into Garde or non Garde status. It was the only Prussian infantry regiment that carried "Leib" or "Life" status. Three Prussian Husaren-Regiments (one Leib-Garde-Regiment and two Leib-Regiments) and one Prussian Küraßier-Regiment, carried "Leib" status. Saxony, Baden, and Hesse-Darmstadt had infantry and/or cavalry Leib-Regiments. The unusual Prussian infantry regiment of which we speak is Leib-Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm III (1. Brandenburgisches) Nr 8. The regiment was raised in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars in 1809. It was garrisoned at Frankfurt a. O., and assigned to the III. ArmeeKorps. The pin itself is of the highest quality. It measures 1 1/2" x 3/4." Its central theme is a shield bearing König Friedrich Wilhelm III’s regimental cypher. I believe the shield is made of GOLD. Flanking the shield are some wonderful oak leaves (just branches, not a full wreath). Also atop the shield is a handsomely-crafted Hohenzollern Crown. It is very full with a high-relief effect. In turn, an elegant, horizontal, oval-shaped wreath surrounds the crown, shield, and oak leaves. An attractive pin is featured on its reverse. This is a magnificent piece from one of the most elite Prussian infantry regiments. When you have it in your hands, you will marvel at the quality of its design and construction. $975.00

17-581 REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC PIN - INFANTERIE REGIMENT Nr 80 - PRUSSIA. This is an ultra high-quality patriotic regimental pin, which was purchased for an officer’s wife, sweetheart, mother, sister, etc. He served in Füsilier-Regiment von Gersdorff (Kurhessisches) Nr 80. The regiment was founded in 1813. Bataillone Nr 1 and Nr 2 were located in Wiesbaden, while Bataillon Nr 3 was garrisoned in Homburg. The regiment was attached to the XVIII. ArmeeKorps. The pin sports a beautiful gilt finish. This high gilt finish is laid over .925 silver. The pin is so marked on the reverse. On the obverse, the regiment’s cypher appears within a beautiful oak and laurel leaf wreath. The cypher and wreath are topped by a beautiful, slotted crown. The detail on the reverse is equally enticing. A very sturdy high quality pin and catch are in place that allow the pin to be fixed to a garment. The pin measures 1 1/4" x 3/4." This serves as a reminder of the superior-quality people from the Imperial German Period expected from patriotic jewelry purveyors. Excellence was VERY important to the people that gave and received these items. This man was extremely proud of his regiment. The loved one to whom he gave this pin shared and reinforced that pride when she wore it. $550.00

32-170 PATRIOTIC PIN MADE OF SMALL DENOMINATION GERMAN COINS. This is an interesting patriotic pin made from small denomination German coins. Eight coins are laid edge to edge to form a dome, with one slightly larger coin laid on top. A pin on the reverse allows it to be attached to the wearer’s garment. I have never seen a pin quite like it. All of the coins date from the 1860's. It is well-made, simply marvelous and very showy. It would look fantastic on someone’s lapel, how about you? $95.00

32-161 PATRIOTIC PIN REPRESENTING GERMANY’S KAISER WILHELM II AND AUSTRIA’S KAISER FRANZ JOSEF. WW I’s early years featured a lot of patriotic representation of Germany and Austria’s alliance. In this case, we have a very finely-made, early-war patriotic pin. The circular, gold-toned, mini badge is attached to a pin and measures 1 ½" in diameter. A wreath of oak leaves encircles it. Facing each other in the badge’s center are the Austrian and German Kaisers. At the badge’s top is a Hohenzollern Crown, with "1914" directly beneath it. At the very bottom is a 1914 Iron Cross. The badge is in excellent condition. $75.00

32-102 KAISER WILHELM II - KAISER FRANZ JOSEF PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a very high-quality patriotic pin that features German and Austrian Kaisers Wilhelm II and Franz Josef. They are seen in profile on what appears to be silver enamel. A black trim line has been hand painted beneath the two men. Each end sports a spray of holly leaves and red berries. The trim band is marked in its center with a red, white and green emblem. The pin has a glass cover and a silver-toned frame and back, which sports a manufacturer’s hallmark. The pin measures 1" in diameter. I believe that due to the quality and style of construction, the pin is Austrian. This is reinforced by the red, white and green emblem.$150.00

32-136 PRUSSIAN THALER COIN CONVERTED TO PIN FEATURING KÖNIG WILHELM AND KÖNIGIN AUGUSTA OF PRUSSIA. We have seen similar coins in the past that celebrated Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiserin Augusta Viktoria (of Schleswig-Holstein). [In those, Wilhelm II was on a one Mark coin]. Today we are offering a similar coin for his grandfather, König Wilhelm, and his wife, Königin Augusta (of Saxe-Weimar). The coin predated 1871, when he became Kaiser Wilhelm I following the Franco-Prussian War’s end. The coin is made of silver. It measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The obverse shows the royal couple in profile with crowns. It was a Prussian coin, so they are noted as Prussia’s King and Queen.
Much of the coin’s background was cut out to highlight the couple. The reverse shows the Hohenzollern Eagle as its central theme. On the edge we can see that the coin was a Thaler rather than a Mark. A fine sturdy pin has been soldered on the reverse. $125.00

32-142 ROYAL/NOBLE PERSONAGE’S VERY HIGH-QUALITY PIN. This is an ultra high-quality pin with semiprecious stones attached in several places. It goes well beyond the scope of the traditional patriotic pin. It features a shield measuring 1 1/4" x 1." The shield is made of red, black, and gold enamel. A black and gold griffin is applied over the red enamel. The red enamel casts a very deep field. Above the shield is a crown. The use of the griffin leads me to believe that the pin was produced for the Grand Duchy of Baden, which used a griffin on their various headdresses’ wappens.
Hanging down from the shield are three separate gilt-toned attachments that I refer to as "danglers." Three green semiprecious stones are attached to each dangler. The biggest of the three stones is pear-shaped. The badge’s reverse has a sturdy pin to securely attach the pin to a garment.
It is a quite unusual, very high-quality item, well above and beyond more common patriotic jewelry examples.
$125.00

32-104 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This is a very interesting, high-quality patriotic pin. It is circular and measures 1" in diameter. A black and silver enamel 1914 Iron Cross is in the center. The Iron Cross is circled by a black enamel ring that frames it quite attractively. On the reverse is a horizontal pin. Both a manufacturer’s hallmark and one for silver content (.800) on the reverse. VERY few patriotic pins that we see are made of .800 silver! Usually, they were inexpensive. In this case, somebody clearly wanted a memorable piece. It certainly fits the bill. $150.00

17-01 IRON CROSS PIN WHICH IS ALSO A MOURNING PIECE OF A SOLDIER WEARING A FELDGRAU UNIFORM AND A PICKELHAUBE. This is a very unique circular Iron Cross pin. What makes it unique is that it is a mourning piece and is black (it photographed bronze, but is actually black). Further on the reverse a small photo of the deceased wearing a Pickelhaube is shown which would indicate that it is an early war piece and would date prior to 1916. $95.00

32-101 PATRIOTIC RED CROSS PIN - KRONPRINZ FRANZ JOSEF OTTO - AUSTRIA. This is a wonderful Austrian Red Cross pin commemorating Kronprinz Franz Josef Otto. His color likeness appears in mother-of-pearl. The pin measures 15/16" in diameter. All of it is housed under glass. His name surrounds him on the edge and the Red Cross is below him. He looks to be about five or six. The Kronprinz’s father was Kaiser Karl, who assumed the throne in 1916 after the death of Kaiser Franz Josef. Kaiser Karl was the head of the Hapsburg family and, after 1918, the Pretender to the throne until his death in 1922. Franz Josef Otto succeeded his father in 1922 and remained the House of Hapsburg’s head until 2007. As a matter of fact at the ripe old age of ninety-eight, he remains alive TODAY!! This spectacular pin is in excellent condition. It is one of the finest pins that I have ever had the pleasure to share with you. $250.00

32-75 AUSTRIAN PATRIOTIC PIN. The Austrians were noted for their enamel work. This patriotic pin is no exception. It measures 1" in diameter. Its outer edge is trimmed with gold-toned metal. The pin’s background is under glass. This is a gorgeous silver-white in color, with a mottled texture that suggests snakeskin or leather. 32-111 PATRIOTIC PIN FEATURING HERZOG ERNST AUGUST AND HERZOGIN VIKTORIA LUISE - BRAUNSCHWEIG. This patriotic pin commemorates the 1913 wedding of Braunschweig’s Duke Ernst August (1887-1953) to Prussia’s Princess Viktoria Luise (1892-1980). "Vikki Lu," as she was known in Germany, was Kaiser Wilhelm II’s only daughter. The marriage resolved some long-standing resentment that hailed back to when Prussia "absorbed" Hannover and Braunschweig after the latter’s defeat during the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. After this marriage, control of Braunschweig was returned to Ernst August. He and his young bride then repaired to Braunschweig, where she was much beloved by the people. According to all accounts, theirs was a happy marriage, and far more successful for the young princess than many of her brothers marriages.
The pin, which measures 1 1/4" in diameter, is silver-toned. The obverse shows the royal couple in high-relief. He appears in his Husaren-Regiment Nr 17 uniform. Their names are listed on the obverse. The reverse displays a crown with rays of light emanating from it, shining down on "Zum Andenken An Die Thronbesteigung Des Herzogpaares 1913" (To commemorate the accession of the Duke and Duchess 1913). A pin and catch also are attached to the reverse. The patriotic pin is in excellent condition for being nearly one-hundred-years old.

17-423 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PINS. I was really taken by this dazzling pair of Iron Cross patriotic pins. I will describe them individually. You may purchase them together or separately, as you prefer. The first of the two pins is circular and measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The frame is filigreed and silver-toned, although not actually silver. The center of the pin is constructed of two pieces that have been attached. The lower portion is a handsome, dark-blue, rounded and vaulted porcelain bisque. Attached to that is a stunning white, vaulted Iron Cross trimmed in black. This pin is impeccably made and of the highest caliber. This second pin is identical to the first in every respect, except that the bisque centerpiece is hand painted in a sumptuous burgundy. The condition of this example is equal to the blue piece. Both are ravishingly ornate and splendid. You may purchase either of these lovely patriotic pins for $150.00 a piece, or the pair for $275.00. .

17-298 PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin, which is oval-shaped, is really quite delicate. It is one of my favorite varieties of patriotic pins. The multicolored enamel design looks like gaily colored pressed flowers (there are seven of them of different colors and sizes) on the left side of the pin. On the right side is a 1914 Iron Cross. All of this is then under glass, which in some ways makes it look like a very fancy paper weight. This is just so delicate! I can remember only coming across this type once or twice in the past. I believe the glass on one was damaged. This one is stunning. It would make a wonderful gift for a special someone! $150.00

17-288 PATRIOTIC ENAMELED IRON CROSS PIN ON ORIGINAL SALES CARD. This is a fairly standard patriotic pin featuring a black enamel Iron Cross with gold trim. Patriotic Soldier & Sailor Photographic Pins

Patriotic Photograph pins are a popular genre within the patriotic jewelry portion of Imperial German collecting.
I find these particularly touching as they often show the husbands, sweethearts, sons, or brothers of the women of the period. In this category we see men both before and during World War I.
As I look at these young faces I wonder and hope that they survived the war.

From time to time we also find patriotic photograph pins of figures of royalty, military, or civilian figures.

32-99 PATRIOTIC PIN - COLORIZED PHOTOGRAPH OF A YOUNG TROOPER IN A HUSAREN-REGIMENT. This is a highly unusual patriotic pin featuring a young enlisted Husaren-Regiment trooper’s colorized photograph. The pin has a lot going for it. First, colorized likenesses are not very common. Second, finding a Husaren trooper in his busby is a plus. In looking at his busby’s details, we can tell that he was in a Prussian Regiment. He was a member of either Husaren-Regiment Graf Goetzen (2. Schlesisches) Nr 6 or Magdeburgisches Husaren-Regiment Nr 10. The diameter of the pin measures 1 ½." The frame in which the photograph has been installed is gilt-toned. They were popular both before and during WW I. This pin is gold-toned and measures 1 1/4" x 1 1/4." The soldier appears to be wearing both a prewar, dark-blue uniform and a Prussian pickelhaube. 32-138 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN WITH PICKELHAUBE & CANVAS COVER-WEARING SOLDIER. This is one of the always-popular patriotic photo pins that were worn by the mothers, sweethearts, wives, or sisters of soldiers serving in the army. They were especially popular in WW I’s early years, when the ladies’ loved ones first served at the front.
The photo shows a very young man with a canvas cover over his pickelhaube. The photo is typical of the war’s beginning, when the young soldiers went to war wearing flowers stuck down their gun barrels or pinned on their chests. By the hundreds of thousands these brave, naive souls perished on France and Belgium’s muddy fields.
The photo holder is gilt-toned. It sports twelve balls that correspond with the numbers on a clock. Its overall condition is very fine. $125.00

32-144 PATRIOTIC PIN FEATURING COLORIZED PHOTOGRAPH OF KRONPRINZ WILHELM & KRONPRINZESSIN CECILIE. Over the years, we have shared many patriotic pins and pendants featuring photographs of young soldiers. Today, we are offering something a bit different. Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria were Germany’s most-popular royals. Not far behind were the young royals who would one day replace them: Crown Prince Wilhelm and Crown Princess Cecilie. The handsome young couple were photogenic and quite popular among patriotic Germans. The small pin’s gilt-toned frame houses a colorized photograph of the young pair, and measures 3/4" in diameter. The Crown Prince is clearly wearing the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß’s uniform. He has a medal bar on his left breast. His wife, Cecilie, is wearing a white gown. It is a simple yet attractive mini pin. $95.00

32-114 PATRIOTIC PIN OF A SOLDIER WEARING A FELDGRAU UNIFORM AND A PICKELHAUBE. Patriotic pins that depict a soldier or sailor are very popular with collectors. Typically a mother, wife or sweetheart obtained a small pin that allowed them to insert a photo of their loved one. Then they wore it on a blouse or dress as a means of showing support for their loved one. This example is certainly one of the more unusual ones that I have ever shared with you. The fairly standard pin, which measures 1 1/4" in diameter, has a gilt-toned frame with an interesting design on its outer edges. On the reverse we see a manufacturer’s hallmark. The inserted photograph shows a soldier wearing his pickelhaube. Over the pickelhaube he is wearing his canvas protective cover. It is a very fine example. It is always a treat to share something along these lines. Showing a pickelhaube rather than a mütze or Schirmmütze is a plus. $110.00

32-115 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN. This is a patriotic photo pin. It measures 3/4" in diameter. Pins like it were purchased so the owner could place a loved one’s photograph in its interior. This particular example shows a bearded man in uniform. It is complete with a pin on the reverse for attaching it to one’s clothing. It allowed those on the home front to keep the loved ones for whom they prayed close to their hearts. $75.00

32-46 PATRIOTIC PIN WITH YOUNG SOLDIER’S PHOTOGRAPH. Patriotic pins, which allowed the wearer to insert a loved one’s photo as the pin’s central subject, were quite popular during WW I among the wives, mothers, sisters, and sweethearts of soldiers at the front. This pin with photo measures 1" in diameter. I can tell nothing about the solder in the image. It gives no clue about his regiment, etc. It is very well made, and in excellent condition. $125.00

17-320 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN OF A SOLDIER WEARING A UNIFORM FROM AN ELITE REGIMENT AND A MÜTZE. Germans highly prized the patriotic pins from before and during WW I that allowed one to insert in them photos of loved ones who were serving in the military. I personally find these very poignant. I often wonder how the young men fared during the war. This is an ornate example of a very young soldier. He was, I believe, a member of one of the better-known grenadier regiments. The pin is very detailed. It has what appear to be faux pearls at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. The pin is in excellent condition. $185.00

It consists of a brass frame that can be opened on the reverse, and allow a photo to be inserted. Patriotic pins such as these were very popular with women back home. It allowed them to remember and display photos of their loved ones who were fighting at the front. The photo shows an enlisted man from an unknown regiment. I hope he returned home to the woman who wore this pin for him. $95.00

32-174 PATRIOTIC PIN - PHOTO OF SOLDIER. Both before and during WW I, the German people showed great patriotism and support for their soldiers and sailors. One means of showing that support was for the women to wear a pin containing a soldier’s or sailor’s photograph. It could be considered a sweetheart pin. Our example features a simple gold-toned frame that measures 1" in diameter. A young enlisted soldier appears within the frame, dressed in feldgrau and wearing his mütze. The pin on its reverse allowed it to be attached to a dress or blouse. It is very reasonably-priced. $50.00
