40-670 TWO ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF KAISER WILHELM II WHILE EXILED IN THE NETHERLANDS. This offering consists of two original photographs of Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) after WW I ‘s end, while he lived in the Netherlands. After WW I ended, Kaiser Wilhelm II was exiled to live the balance of his life in the Netherlands at Huis Doorn. It was an agreeable place to live, if not as exciting as ruling over Germany. Wilhelm II was nearly sixty years old when he went into exile. While Huis Doorn is a lovely estate (I have had the privilege to visit it several times), it is certainly not like the castles that Wilhelm II left behind. The elderly Kaiser suddenly had a lot of spare time on his hands. He was quite good about answering letters from admirers. He would answer people who had written to him and send autographed photos or postcards when asked by them or if he felt the people would like it. Wilhelm II had always been very generous with gifts. He continued that to some extent, giving items that he had brought with him from Germany in 50+ railroad boxcars.
The former Kaiser also tried to keep himself fit. He was constantly involved in the cutting down of trees to feed the fireplaces and cooking stoves. The first photograph measures 3 ¼" x 4 ¼." It shows the Kaiser and four other men seated at a table in the wood-cutting area. A large pile of firewood can be seen behind him. The Kaiser and the other men are all wearing business suits and ties. A large German Shepherd sits near the Kaiser. Actually, the primary dogs that Wilhelm II owned were Daschunds. Between Kaiser Wilhelm II’s crypt and the main home are several small graves where the house dogs are buried.
The second photo is much larger and measures 7" x 9½." In this photograph Wilhelm II and seven other men are involved in cutting down trees. In an interesting note, I see no less than three of the men (possibly more) are wearing military trousers. As Wilhelm II had a withered arm, he chopped wood one-handed with a hatchet.
This is a wonderful two photo set that gives you a glimpse into a deposed-emperor’s life in exile.

40-653 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF KAISER WILHELM II ABOARD ROYAL YACHT S. M. Y. HOHENZOLLERN. This is a marvelous oversized original photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II aboard his royal yacht the S. M. Y. Hohenzollern. The Kaiser took great pride in both his Navy and his yacht. He spent a great deal of time aboard it, visited much of Europe and beyond. The photograph is mounted on a stiff backing that measures 6 ½" x 8 ½." The photo itself measures 4 ½" x 6 ½." In the scene he is on deck facing the camera in an Admiral’s uniform (he had not yet promoted himself to Großadmiral). He is accompanied by several women in their finery, one of whom is most certainly the Kaiserin. A small buffet table is present, from which the ladies are taking food. A crewman uniformed in his summer whites stands with his back to the camera as he serves his Kaiser.
The S. M. Y. Hohenzollern was on a cruise which was to take it from Germany to Turkey and on to Jerusalem. The date and the name of the royal yacht are written in pencil at the bottom of the cardboard backing. We can see two Turkish soldiers at attention facing a German officer. The photograph is dated 23 October 1898. Original photographs of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the S. M. Y. Hohenzollern are very hard to find. This example is excellent.

40-654 CABINET PHOTOGRAPH OF PRUSSIA’S KRONPRINZ FRIEDRICH WILHELM (LATER GERMANY’S KAISER FRIEDRICH III). This is a large Cabinet Photograph of Kaiser Friedrich III (1831-1888), Kaiser Wilhelm I’s son. Upon his father’s death in 1888, he became Germany’s second Kaiser. Sadly, his reign was short. He died ninety-nine days after his rise to the throne. [How interesting history might have been had he lived longer! He and his wife, Kaiserin Victoria (Queen Victoria of England’s eldest daughter) were both progressives who had many ideas that would have charted a different course for the German Empire than what occurred under their son, Wilhelm II]. Friedrich III was a seasoned army commander who led major portions of the Prussian Army during the 1864 Danish-Prussian War, 1866 Austro-Prussian War, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. Joined with Generalfeldmarschall von Moltke (the architect of the Prussian Army as a fighting machine) as commander of the German General Staff, the two successfully charted a winning strategy through three sharp and furious wars.
In actuality, a Cabinet Photograph is a larger version of the CdV, an extremely popular type of Victorian-era photograph. The example measures 4 ¼" x 6 ½." It was produced by the Hermann Selle photographic studio in Potsdam, a Hofphotograph (House Photographer) to the House of Hohenzollern. He was located in Potsdam at York Strasse Nr 4. As a House purveyor he was allowed to show the House of Hohenzollern Coat-of-Arms on his photographs.
In the photo, Friedrich stands erect wearing an überrock. His tunic sports the 1870 Iron Cross 1st Class on its left breast. Around his neck is the Grand Cross of the 1870 Iron Cross. In his right hand he holds his sword. His left hands rests on his Generalfeldmarschall’s baton that is lying on a table near a pickelhaube.  This photograph is in excellent condition.

40-665 CABINET PHOTOGRAPH OF KAISER WILHELM I. This is an ultra high-quality Cabinet Photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888), who was Prussia’s König, as well as the Empire’s Kaiser. Wilhelm I was König Friedrich Wilhelm III’s second son. It was Friedrich Wilhelm III (1770-1840) who led Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars against Napoleon, when Prussia was allied with Russia and Great Britain. Wilhelm I’s elder brother Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1795-1861) assumed the throne upon their father’s 1840 death. Friedrich Wilhelm IV ruled Prussia during very stressful times including the 1848 Revolution. In 1857, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV suffered a stroke and was incapacitated. Wilhelm I then stepped in as Regent for his older brother, a role he maintained until Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s death in 1861. Wilhelm I became King of Prussia that same year. He then worked with Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) and General Staff Chief Helmuth von Moltke (1800-1891) to guide Prussia and Germany toward a path of consolidation and centralization. The journey reached its culmination in 1871 when Wilhelm I became Germany’s first Emperor.
Cabinet Photograph is a larger version of the CdV, an extremely popular Victorian-era photograph. This example measures 4 ½" x 6 ½." It was produced by the Berlin photographic studio of Reichard & Lindner Hofphotograph. The firm was one of the House of Hohenzollern’s
official house photographers (as well as several other royals. The studio was located on the famous Berlin street Unter den Linden (Nr 54/55). The photograph’s reverse displays awards they received along with the Coats-of-Arms of the royals they served. [This studio was allowed to take the official deathbed photographs of Kaiser Wilhelm I, AND his son, Kaiser Friedrich III, so the royal family must have held them in the highest regard].
In this pose, the elderly Kaiser is wearing his Generalfeldmarschall’s dress uniform, complete with epaulettes and general’s sash. He is wearing an interesting assortment of medals, including the Kette for the Hohenzollern House Order and the Orden Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves around his neck. He is wearing a huge medal bar with more than ten medals
on his chest, as well as an impressive number of pinback awards (including breast stars). His 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross is also prominently displayed.  The photograph is in excellent condition.

40-669 KAISER WILHELM II’S FUNERAL: SIX ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS. Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) was Germany’s third and final emperor. Today we are offering six large-format photographs related to his funeral. He was Kaiser Friedrich III and Kaiserin Victoria’s oldest son. [Friedrich (1831-1888) was Kaiser Wilhelm I’s heir, while the Kaiserin (1840-1901) was the oldest daughter of England’s Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861)]. Wilhelm II assumed the throne in 1888, after both his father and grandfather died within ninety-nine days of one another. Wilhelm II ruled Germany from 1888 until his abdication in November 1918. At that time he was exiled to Haus Doorn in the Netherlands, where he remained until his death in 1941. He never was allowed to return to Germany, not even for his own burial. His final resting place was in a mausoleum built on Haus Doorn’s grounds.
Many officers who had served during Wilhelm II’s reign came to pay their respects at his funeral. Most notable was Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen. Wilhelm II had been the dashing von Mackensen’s staunch supporter, advancing his career over other, more senior officers. Mackensen always felt extreme loyalty for his Kaiser, to the point that he laid his greatcoat over his former monarch’s casket.

Each photograph measures 5 ¼" x 7 ¼." Their details are noted below.

1). Kaiser Wilhelm II's flag-draped coffin. A large painting of the Kaiser appears behind the coffin, which is draped with the Kaiser's flag. Massive candle holders surround it. The photo’s reverse features an official photographer’s stamp for "S. Fritz" with the SS’s double runes.

2). A procession of mourners. Many officers wearing Imperial Period, Nazi military, and Nazi political uniforms are present. Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen (1849-1945) appears at the front. Mackensen is wearing the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1's uniform, as was his wont. His stern face peering out from under his busby bristling with its large Totenkopf is awe-inspiring. The photo’s reverse features an official photographer’s stamp for "S. Fritz" with the SS’s double runes.

3). Open hearse being loaded with Kaiser Wilhelm II's flag-draped coffin. Stahlhelm-wearing soldiers who will form the coffin’s guard stand in attendance, as do several officers wearing pickelhauben. A naval officer stands in the building’s doorway.

4). An Oberst and a General Holding ordenkissen (decoration pillows). It was customary at an officer’s funeral to have another officer march ahead of the hearse holding a pillow bearing the dead officer’s awards. Here, the Oberst on the right carries an ordenkissen holding the late Kaiser's many awards. He also holds a sword belonging to the former monarch. The general on the left wears his full General Officer’s uniform and pickelhaube. He holds the ordenkissen carrying the Kaiser's Generalfeldmarschall baton. A cleric stands behind these two officers. The honor guard is forming on either side of the automobile as the funeral cortege is being organized. The photo’s reverse features an official photographer’s stamp for "S. Fritz" with the SS’s double runes.

5). The funeral cortege on the march. At the cortege’s head are the two Imperial officers carrying Kaiser Wilhelm II's twin ordenkissen. Following them is the open hearse bearing the late Kaiser's flag-draped coffin. A group of mourners honoring the late Kaiser walk behind the automobile. To the automobile’s right a platoon of stahlhelm-wearing troopers salutes Wilhelm II's body on its way to the waiting train.

6). Two young men in Nazi military uniforms. I am not 100% certain that this photograph belongs with the Kaiser's group, although their surroundings resemble those of the other photographs. One of the young men wears a Luftwaffe uniform, Since it came with the five other photographs, I am including it.

Framed Photographs

40-666 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH OF KRONPRINZ WILHELM. This is a marvelous period framed photograph of Imperial Germany’s Kronprinz Wilhelm (1882-1951). The Kronprinz was one of the most popular Imperial German royalty members. He was an army man who led the V. Armee (5. Armee / Armeeoberkommando 5 / A.O.K. 5) when WW I began. In 1915 he was given command of Heeresgruppe Deutscher Kronprinz (Army Group German Crown Prince), which he led until the Great War’s end, eventually achieving the rank of Generalleutnant. Troops under his command began what became the year-long Battle of Verdun, WW I’s longest and bloodiest battle.
After the war, Wilhelm first followed his father into exile in the Netherlands. In 1923, he was allowed to return to Germany as long as he promised NOT to participate in political activities. [This was done without his father’s knowledge, who was not happy that HE could not return as well]. The Kronprinz soon broke his promise, and supported the Nazi party on an unofficial basis. Ultimately, the Kronprinz became disenchanted when an old friend of his, former German Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher, was murdered during Hitler's 1934 "Night of the Long Knives," which consolidated Der Führer’s political power supremacy. Wilhelm lived a quiet life for the balance of the Nazi regime and WW II. He survived to die in 1951, estranged from his wife Kronprinzessin Cecilie.
The photograph is presented in a simple brown frame that measures 8 ¾" x 11 ¾." The photo is surrounded by a light brown matte. Centered in the matte is the photo of the Kronprinz wearing Küraßier-Regiment Königin (Pommersches) Nr 2's uniform. [PLEASE NOTE: during his military career, Kronprinz Wilhelm was associated with three Prussian regiments, 1 Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1, 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß, and Küraßier-Regiment Königin (Pommersches) Nr 2. He was best known for his association with 1 Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1. Through much of his military career he wore its uniform and Totenkopf-bedecked headdress. Küraßier-Regiment Königin (Pommersches) Nr 2, however, was his mother’s "regiment," as she was its patron. So in this photo he wears "her" uniform. If you look closely, you will see his tunic’s unique to the Küraßier and Jäger zu Pferde Regiments collar. He also wears the Regiment’s ringkragen (gorget), a four-place medal bar, two breast stars, and the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class.
The photograph, which measures 4 ½" x 6 ¼," was taken later in Wilhelm’s life. I estimate that it was taken between 1935 and his 1951 death. At the photograph’s bottom we see it was taken in Kassel by a house photographer. Both frame and photograph are in excellent condition and ready to hang on YOUR wall. $95.00pbjuly16

40-45 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - DELUXE PATRIOTIC FRAME. This is an amazing photograph in a high-quality patriotic frame. The frame measures 5 1/8" x 3 1/8." The image within the frame measures 3 1/4" x2 1/4." The photograph shows a man who appears to be in his 40's. He is wearing an Iron Cross boutonniere in his buttonhole. Now what is especially interesting is that it appears that oak leaves are directly above the Iron Cross. If this is correct, then this would be for an 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class with the Twenty-Five Year Oak Leaves. I do not necessarily think the photograph was taken during the war years. The frame is beautifully manufactured. It is elaborately made. At the very top is a 1914 Iron Cross surrounded by oak leaves. A swing away easel is attached to the frame’s back, which allows display of both photo and frame. A manufacturer’s hallmarking appears on the frame’s lower edge. $250.00

20-305 KAISER WILHELM I PHOTOGRAPH IN PATRIOTIC FRAME. This is a very high-quality, silver-toned, patriotic frame in the shape of an Iron Cross. The frame measures 5 3/4" x 6 1/4." Among the Iron Cross’s arms are laurel leaves on one side, with oak leaves and acorns on the other. An oval-shaped inset in the center measures 2" x 2 3/4." It allows a photograph to be displayed within the oval. A crown appears directly over the oval space’s top.
The reverse sports two means of displaying the frame. First a small easel appears, which when set in place, allows the frame to be displayed on a flat surface. An eyelet at its top means it could be hung from the wall using a nail or picture hanger. A vertical attachment is also present whereby you can insert a photograph for display. The easel device is mounted to its reverse.
The subject shown here comes from a Kaiser Wilhelm I postcard. He is seen in his full dress uniform and wears the Orden pour le Mérite at his neck, Hohenzollern House Order Kollar, and a large medal bar that includes the 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class. Two breast stars are on his left breast.
While this is how the frame came to us, of course you may insert most any postcard (some trimming will be necessary), other original photograph, or CdV. The frame is in very fine condition. $175.00

38-63 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - PRINCESS CECILIE AND HER DAUGHTER. Princess Cecilie was one of the most popular of the royals in Germany. She was a princess from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and was later married to Wilhelm, Kronprinz of Germany, the oldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II. She was very involved in relief efforts in Germany, both before and during WW I. She was an attractive woman. The people of Germany took her to their hearts, as she was very good with people and quite photogenic.  This period-framed piece shows her with her baby, the Princess Alexandrine. The frame is gilt and measures 12 1/2" x 9 1/2." The photograph measures 6" x 6 1/4." A dedication in pencil is on the photograph, advising the cause that the proceeds of the photograph would benefit. It is in wonderful condition, and ready to hang on your wall. $195.00

40-586 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH OF HUSAREN-REGIMENT Nr 7 COMMANDER - PRUSSIA. This is a framed photograph of Husaren-Regiment König Wilhelm I. (1. Rheinisches) Nr 7's commanding officer. The regiment was raised in 1815, garrisoned at Bonn, and attached to the VIII. Armeekorps. The photo dates from 1895 to 1914. He is dressed in the regiment’s prewar uniform. He is also wearing his busby, and a neck order that I cannot identify. Furthermore, he sports a large medal bar with at least ten decorations, including an 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class.
The photograph would make a good candidate for a research study. The ornate frame is quite attractive. It is a very handsome display. $95.00

40-650 PERIOD-FRAMED CARTE de VISITE OF YOUNG ENGLISH BOY. This Carte de Visite is of a young English boy. I date it from 1880 through 1910. To begin, the way the boy is dressed and this particular photographic style indicate that his family was from the middle class, or quite possibly even higher. The young lad sports a large tricorn hat set on his head in a jaunty manner. He is dressed in a white outfit that features a lacy overlay upon his shoulders that is loosely tied at his neck, puffy long cuffed sleeves, knee breeches that end at and tightly encircle his knees, white hose that disappear up under his breeches, and shiny black, elaborately buckled shoes. The CdV comes from Edward Sweetland’s photographic studio located at 21 High Street in High Wycombe. Wycombe was a chair-manufacturing center in Buckinghamshire, which grew to become England’s chair-making headquarters in the early 20th Century. Sweetland specialized in children’s portraits, and bought the High Street property in 1904. According to the Buckinghamshire County Council’s internet article on "Early Professional Photographers in Wycombe 1877-1905," as the town grew, families wanted to record their prosperity with photographs.
In my estimation, the real value here is the small period frame. It could be used on any standard-sized CdV if you prefer. The frame is essentially a two-piece affair. A spring-loaded device on the reverse holds the frame’s glass in place. Surprisingly, the glass is quite thick, far thicker than one might think at first glance. It is very substantial. The reverse is a swing-out easel that allows the frame to be set up on a flat surface.

40-256 FRAMED COLOR LIKENESS - PRINZ REGENT LUITPOLD - BAVARIA. This is a WW I era frame that measures 1 1/2" x 3 1/4." The image area measures 5 1/4" x 3 1/4." At the bottom is an area that measures 7 1/2" x 4 1/4," with a 1914 Iron Cross. In the area for the image is a color likeness of Prinz Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. He led Bavaria from 1886 (and König Ludwig II’s death) until his own death in 1911. On the reverse is a foldaway easel. $95.00

40-182 FRAMED CdV - GARDE-REGIMENT - PRUSSIA. This is a most unusual photo frame housing a Carte de Visite from a Garde-Regiment. The man is dressed in his uniform, with an overcoat over his shoulders. He is wearing a pickelhaube with a black parade bush. The Garde Star is clearly visible on his wappen. The photograph was taken at a Berlin studio. The frame is quite intriguing. It is made from a combination of four empty shell casings and six complete (deactivated[!]) bullets. At the frame’s top of is a kriegsflagge crossed with another flag. An easel that permits the frame to stand on its own is attached to the frame’s back. The frame and CdV make a very fine set. $175.00

40-582 S. M. S. KAISERIN SAILOR’S FRAMED ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLAGE. This is a most interesting photographic collage of a sailor who served aboard the S. M. S. Kaiserin. The Kaiserin was a part of the four-ship "Kaiser" Battleship Class. She was commissioned in 1913 and participated in many naval actions during WW I. Most important, she participated in the Battle of Jutland, which took place on 31 May 1916.
The collage’s center shows a sailor in his dress tunic. It is quite clear that he belonged to the S. M. S. Kaiserin’s crew. Surrounding the ship are other bits and pieces that include Kaiser Wilhelm II and his younger brother, Prinz Heinrich. Both men are in an admiral’s gala (dress) uniform. Below the sailor we see a line of battleships at speed.
The collage’s frame is a real attention-getter. It measures 4 1/4" x 6 ½." It sports a classy shade of brown, and its four, beautiful, rounded corners simply take one’s eyes hostage! The frame’s interior measurements are 3 7/8" x 5 5/8." Its reverse has two places from which it could be hung from a wall. It also has an easel that allows the frame to be set up on a flat surface. You will truly enjoy this one!

40-165 FRAMED LITHOGRAPH - ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE. This is a framed lithograph or newspaper photograph of Vizeadmiral Graf von Spee. He was an hero early in WW I. He brought his squadron east across the Pacific and defeated a British squadron off the coast of Chile. Barely a month later, his squadron was defeated at the Battle of the Falklands. Spee and his two sons died in the action. The photograph (in the frame) measures 11 1/2" x 8 1/2." The period frame measures 9" x 6." $50.00

40-577 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - GERMAN SHIP BY ICEBERG. I am not certain of this German ship’s identity. From its profile, I would say that it is a smaller, fleet-auxiliary ship rather than a ship intended for combat. I see no evidence of gun turrets on it. A large group of her crew is gathered aft. The frame measures 13 ½" x 18 3/16." The actual image within the frame measures 10 5/8" x 15 5/16." The frame is simply made of black wood, and has multiple chips out of it. It is not the most attractive frame that I have ever seen. The frame and photograph do have value, however, and would display attractively on your wall. $75.00

40-290 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - SAILORS - KOMMANDO IN ADMIRALSTAB - BERLIN 1907. This is a large, period-framed photograph of sailors who served with the Kommando in Admiralstab (Admirals’ Staff Command) in Berlin, 1907. A total of twenty-one men is in the photograph, which uses a large kriegsflagge for background. The photograph’s matted area features information on their assignment and year at the top. EACH man is identified at the bottom. The photograph measures 8 1/2" x 11." A problem exists with the large-format photograph. You will note a large number of what appears to be black dots. Something also has begun with the developing process. Some of the faces are distorted and difficult to decipher. The photograph and matte are in a period frame, measuring 19" x 21 1/2." It is made of wood with a brass inner section and a gilded inner trim. Glass covers the photograph. It is an amazing piece of history that is more than one-hundred-years-old. It is bargain-priced. [Shipping will be more costly due to its size and depending on its delivery destination]. $110.00

40-557 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - S. M. S. NIXE. The S. M. S. Nixe was built as a Kreuzerkorvette in 1885. She had three masts, but also was propelled by motors. She very much resembled warships from the Napoleonic Era, as she had gun ports. That said, the ship was armored. As the Kaiserliche Marine modernized, she was relegated to use as a training ship for cadets. The period frame measures 13 5/8" x 11 7/8," and hails from the 1900-1918 time period. Inside the frame is a matted color lithograph of the ship, which measures 6 11/16" x 4 3/4." The lithograph is dated 1900. Inside the framed area is the vessel’s name and the fact that she was a school ship. It is ready to hang on any wall. $95.00

40-204 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - MATROSEN DIVISION SAILORS - CHINA. This is a wonderful framed photograph that shows a group of enlisted sailors (thirteen men) standing and kneeling with rifles. They are part of a Matrosen-Division. Two petty officers are also among the group on the back row. The photo is dated 1910, and was taken at Wilhelmshaven. On the reverse, August Kläfkr, one of the men’s names, is penciled in. He was born in 1887 and assigned to 1. Kompagnie II. Matrosen-Division (though not at birth[!]). He also noted that from 1910-1912 he served in East Asia (Ostasien) aboard the S. M. Torpedoboot S90. The photo measures 6 1/2” x 9.” The period brown frame measures 11” x 14 1/2.” A very good chance exists that he served during WW I. $125.00

40-207 FRAMED REICHSMARINE PHOTOGRAPH.
This is an interesting photograph, which dates from the 1920's. It shows a group of twenty-eight officers on what I believe is a Cruiser. The first row shows the ship’s senior officers, many of whom are wearing the 1914 Iron Cross 1st or 2nd Class. I also see an Iron Cross 1st Class equivalent from Oldenburg and Mecklenburg-Schwerin on a tunic or two. The ship’s commander is readily visible in the middle of the front row. He is wearing the uniform of a Kapitän zur See, complete with an old-fashioned, winged-collar shirt. As a matter of fact, as I look more closely at the EK 2 ribbon in his buttonhole, I believe I see the crown and crossed swords of the Knights Cross with Swords of the Hohenzollern House Order! The photo, which measures 5” x 7 1/4,” is housed in a period brown wooden frame measuring 6 1/2” x 9.” This is a real research project for the right collector. $40.00

16-192 FRAMED STUDIO PORTRAIT - NCO - AVIATION UNIT. This is a framed studio photograph of a young NCO attached to an aviation unit. He is holding a sword with portopee, and his visor cap. His shoulder straps clearly identify him for being in an aviation unit. The brown wood, period-framed presentation measures 12" x 9." A fastener is on the back of the frame, so this is ready to hang and enjoy. The young soldier’s photo measures 6" x 3," within the frame. The photographer’s name, address, and even his telephone number are noted on the matting. The photographer was located in Köln (Cologne). $110.00

16-136 FRAMED COLOR ILLUSTRATION OF AND POEM TO OSWALD BOELCKE. This is a touching memorial poem to the "Father" of German aviation tactics, Oswald Boelcke. Boelcke was an amazing aviator who, at the time of his death in October 1916, had forty confirmed victories to his credit, and more than triple the kills of his closest pursuer. With the victories he had to his credit, and with the better quality planes that were starting to reach service, had he not perished in the collision, HOW many victories could he have claimed? Think of "Bloody April" in 1917, where many of the pilots in Jasta 11 shot down 15 to 25 planes in a single month! This framed presentation is in a modern frame, which measures 14 1/4" x 11 1/4," with a light, wooden molding. Framed within is a colorized picture of Boelcke in his helmet, with his goggles on his forehead. Below is a very popular memorial poem. The page, which appears to have been removed from a book (I see what I believe is a page number), measures 11 ½" x 8 ½." $40.00 .

40-50 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN INFANTERIE-REGIMENT. This is a framed photograph showing a young soldier from a Mecklenburg-Schwerin infantry regiment. He was assigned to either Grossherzogl Mecklenburgisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr 89, or Grossherzogl Mecklenburgisches Füsilier-Regiment Nr 90. We can tell this from his belt buckle. He is wearing a pickelhaube with a canvas cover, so we cannot see his wappen to make an identification from it. He is also wearing a bayonet at his side. I n the upper left corner, stretched diagonally, is the ribbon for the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. Stretched diagonally from the upper right corner is the ribbon for the Hanseatic Cross from Hamburg. This leads us to believe that the man pictured won both of these awards. The black wooden frame, trimmed in gold, measures 10 1/4" x 6." The photograph within the frame measures 9" x 4 1/2." A hook is on the reverse. The photograph is ready to hang on your wall or be displayed on a bookcase. $65.00jbnov16

40-10 PERIOD FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - LEHR-INFANTRIE-BATAILLON - POTSDAM. This is a wonderful photograph of the Lehr-Infantrie-Bataillon on parade. The Lehr-Infantrie-Bataillon was created in 1820 during the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was a special training unit which while a complete and separate Bataillon was attached to 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß in 1895. So as a matter of course, 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß had four Bataillons instead of the more typical three of an infantry regiment. Thus the Lehr-Bataillon was actually garrisoned in Potsdam and would have been assigned to the GardeKorps.  It was used for special training and tactics which might then be used in the German army and to ensure conformity to the drilling and training throughout the German army. It was quite elite and was often seen at functions that included the Kaiser. It was a great honor to be assigned to the Bataillon. Here, it is seen at the Neuen Palais (built during the reign of King Frederick the Great)  of Kaiser Wilhelm II in Potsdam. The framed photograph measures 15 1/2" x 18 1/2," while the photograph contained therein measures 8 1/2" x 11 1/2." The photo was taken by a house photographer. The firm was appointed by Imperial decree to take official photographs of the Kaiser and his family. The arrangement would have been similar to the court or house jewelers such as Godet & Sohn, Wagner & Sohn, etc. The large photo was taken 5 June 1911. Both the photograph and the frame are very high quality. I suspect that this hung in the home of one of the Bataillon members with great pride. [Buy this photograph and the photograph below and receive a 10% discount on the pair! Special handling and shipping will be required on this piece due to its size.] $125.00

40-12 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - NCO HUSSAR (IN A FELDGRAU UNIFORM)  AND FAMILY. This is a simple, period-framed photograph of a Senior NCO Hussar and his family. The man is also a musician. He can be seen wearing a feldgrau attila to which a musician’s swallows nests are attached. While I cannot be certain, I believe this man was a member of Husaren-Regiment Fürst Blücher von Wahlstatt (Pommersches) Nr 5. The regiment was initially formed in 1758. It was garrisoned at Stolp, where it was attached to the XVII. ArmeeKorps. The regiment was named in honor of the great Prussian hero of Waterloo who Generalfeldmarschall von Blücher, along with the Duke of Wellington, delivered the knockout blow to Napoleon, ending his dreams of European domination once and for all. Without the arrival of the Prussian Army at Waterloo, Wellington was on the verge of defeat. The arrival of fresh and well-led Prussian troops changed the course of history. The photograph of this man shows him wearing an NCO’s visor cap, a holster with pistol, and a sword. His wife is seated and his young son is dressed in the overcoat and visor cap of a Hussar, just like his papa. This is typical of the "Kinder" tradition of young sons dressing like their fathers. Uniforms, headdress, swords, etc. were all a part of this tradition. The massive, framed presentation measures 15" x 11." The matted photograph in the frame measures 26 1/2" x 22 1/2." This is a poignant presentation of a young family either just before the war began or perhaps even shortly after it started. [Special handling and shipping will be required on this piece due to its size.] $250.00

40-556 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - OFFICER - AWARDEE - 1914 IRON CROSS 1st CLASS. This is an officer’s framed photograph. He is wearing a feldbluse tunic. Attached to his left breast is the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class. The frame measures 9 1/8" x 6 13/16." A small dent appears in the metal frame’s lower right corner. The frame dates from 1930 or before. It might even be a wartime frame. The photograph measures 4 1/8" x 6," and features the photographic studio’s name and address. An easel is on the frame’s reverse so it can be displayed on a flat surface. $95.00

12-428 FRAMED SOLDIER’S FAMILY PHOTO. This is a postcard-sized original photograph of a family or families of females and soldiers. It is enclosed in a patriotic frame embroidered in Germany’s national colors of red, black and white. The frame measures 4 ½" x 6 ½." Three young women and one older woman, who may be the mother of the four soldiers, are in the photo. One of the younger women has a small girl sitting on her lap. The photo is dated 1916. Seated in the center is an NCO, who appears to be the eldest. He is wearing a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class in his buttonhole and a large ribbon bar on his tunic. He is also holding TWO canes, so he was severely wounded. This is an interesting study of a family pausing in the midst of war. $60.00

12-385 MINIATURE FRAMED MOURNING PHOTO OF A SOLDIER. Here we have a small black frame measuring 3 1/8" x 2 5/8." Frames like this were used as mourning pieces to house the photos of soldiers who died in their country’s service. A small silver Iron Cross is embossed on the bottom of the frame. Inside the frame is a photo of a young NCO. A piece of the glass is missing in the frame’s upper left corner. As always, such pieces are heartbreakingly touching. $55.00

12-255 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH OF A YOUNG GIRL. A most interesting framed photograph of a young girl (I would estimate her to be 8-12 years old.). I rather get the impression that she has just attended her 1st Communion as she is wearing a long white dress and is wearing a crucifix and appears to be holding a pocket bible. The frame has a bark finish to it and has a 1914 Iron Cross at the bottom. The frame measures about 3" x 5 ½". The photo appears to be from about 1914-1930 but the frame is actually post WW II as it is marked :Made in W. Germany." Very touching as it is or another photo could be substituted if you prefer. $45.00

Elass was a part of the five-ship Braunschweig Battleship Class (Linienschiffe). She was commissioned in 1904. By the time WW I began, she was considered obsolete. She was assigned to the Baltic fleet under Prinz Heinrich’s command. The S.M.S. Elass participated in a couple of minor engagements with Russian ships, was used for coastal defense, and finally was anchored at Kiel, where she was used as a floating barracks. She was scrapped in 1936.
The album has a pebbled exterior and measures 16 ½" x 11" x 1 1/4," Embossed on the front cover is a shield with the S.M.S. Elass’s Coat-of-Arms. [Elass is the German word for Alsace, part of the Alsace-Lorraine territory along the French and German borders, with both French and German-speaking citizens. It was seized by Germany during the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, and returned to France in 1919 as a result of the Treaty of Versailles]. Along with its Coat-of-Arms, the album is imprinted in gold with "Linienschiff Elass."
The album is massive, with a total of thirty-five double pages. Each page has the capability of housing eight postcards or postcard-sized photographs. The album can accommodate a total of two hundred-eighty (280) photographs/postcards. Each page is shielded by a protective glassine sheet. The inside back cover sports a tag for the Wilhelmshaven shop where it was purchased.
The album is in excellent condition, overall. It is a unique artifact from the Kaiserliche Marine. It is a marvelous album for housing any postcard or photograph collection, especially a Navy one.

40-636 XDG GENERALMAJOR WERNER von LENTHE’S PHOTO ALBUM FROM HIS TIME AS CONSTANTINOPLE GERMAN MISSION’S CHIEF OF STAFF. This is a consignment item. It is a photo album for a Generalmajor who served in Constantinople as the German Mission’s Chief of Staff. Werner von Lenthe (1863-1942) was a career military officer. He entered the army in 1884 and served as a leutnant in Oldenburg Dragoner-Regiment Nr 19. He continued on to serve in Husaren-Regiment Nr 7 as an oberleutnant from 1892 until 1901. During this time, he also served as an adjutant in Kavallerie-Brigade Nr 20 and at the X. Armeekorps, when he was promoted to Rittmeister. As a Rittmeister, he was transferred to Mecklenburg-Schwerin Dragoner-Regiment Nr 18. He also served at the War Ministry as a major from 1905 into 1909, then went to Mecklenburg-Schwerin Dragoner-Regiment Nr 17. He then served in Küraßier-Regiment Nr 3, where he was promoted to command the regiment.
Upon his promotion to oberst, he returned to the War Ministry. With the outbreak of the war, he commanded the 10. Landwehr-Brigade, where he remained until transferring to his final wartime post in Turkey in the winter of 1916-1917. He was promoted to Generalmajor in January 1917, holding that post and position until the war’s end. He completed his military career with postwar fighting in Russia, where Germany sent officers as advisors.
The photo album is brown in color and measures 10" x 8 ½" x 1 ½." Approximately ninety-five photos measuring approximately 8 cm x 5.5 cm are included. They show the Bosporus with warships, fortifications, and daily Turkish life. Also included are five original postcards on postcard stock that show von Lenthe and other cavalry officers from the period. They show a variety of cavalry officers in their respective uniforms. They are autographed. Research that describes the action in each photo appears on a separate page.
Speaking of research, it includes an incredible work up about von Lenthe’s career and copies of the German research material. The new owner will have an excellent idea of what he has purchased and can follow closely the action depicted therein. Finally, a large photograph (NOT period original) is included. It is printed on high-quality paper measuring 8 ½" x 11," and shows von Lenthe in a generalmajor’s uniform. He wears the 1914 Iron Cross on his left breast, with an extensive ribbon bar above it. It is simply first-rate. $650.00

It is a photo album of Königin Augusta Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr 4 as it fought on the Eastern and Western Fronts during WW I. The album begins on 1 September 1917 with the Battle of Riga. After the battle the regiment, along with the remainder of 2. Garde-Infanterie-Regiment, was transferred to France for rest and refitting. It was then placed in the St. Mihiel Salient. The regiment participated in most of the big battles in France from mid 1917 until the war’s end in November 1918. It fought in many battles, including the Somme and Ypres. 40-579 LARGE-FORMAT IRON CROSS COMBINATION PHOTOGRAPH/DOCUMENT ALBUM. This is a very interesting album that can accommodate a number of photographs or documents. It is massive, measuring 3 1/4" x 9 ½" x 12 ½." The album is very ornate, with a leather exterior. The front cover has an intricate design cut into its leather. In the center is a gold starburst featuring a black and silver 1813 Iron Cross. It is a representation of the "Star of the Grand Cross." In Germany, this historic decoration is known as the "Blücherstern," since it was awarded after the Battle of Waterloo to Generalfeldmarschall Blücher by König Friedrich Wilhelm III.
[Interestingly, one other "Star of the Grand Cross" was also awarded during WW I. Although Kaiser Wilhelm II had instituted the 1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, he also made ONE award of the "Star" to his most-senior military commander, Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg. The only difference was that the 1914 award featured that date on its Iron Cross, whereas the 1813 version displayed a blank obverse].
Returning to our album, we do see some scattered aging to portions of the leather exterior. Inside the album we see a dedication page that reads:

"Autographen-
Sammlung
Herbert Seidel"

Pasted below these three beautifully-written lines is a real leaf that has been preserved in the album. Looking further, we see a total of twenty-five double-sided pages. The pages on the left were intended for the placement of photographs. These photographs have been removed. The opposite right-side pages have sleeves built into them wherein documents, or perhaps autographs, were inserted. This is a simply stunning and elaborate album. Its uses are only limited by your imagination.[It weighs 7 lbs. 9 oz., and will require extra shipping costs]$250.00

40-621 WW I ERA PHOTO ALBUM. This photo album starts with what I believe are photographs of a peaceful Germany from either before or during WW I’s early part. We see many scenic photographs of rural Germany both during the milder times of the year and winter. Some of these photographs show a fairly grand estate that could well have belonged to a freiherr or a graf. It even may have belonged to one of the men that we will see a bit later on. Next, we begin to see photographs of groups of officers and more military scenes. We catch a glimpse of flight badges in some of the photos. We see scenes of merriment among the men. Nobody lets their hair down like the Germans when the schnapps come out.
We see photos of damaged buildings and even a photo where a German plane has crashed into a building. Many photos were taken by observation aircraft. In these, we can clearly see the damage wrought to the terrain by both bombers and artillery. They look like moonscapes. More than forty-five photographs are in the album.

12-518 POSTCARD ALBUM - KAISER WILHELM II WEARING GARDE du CORPS HELMET ON COVER. This is a very handsome postcard album. It measures 15 1/4" x 9 1/4," and boasts an embossed likeness of Kaiser Wilhelm II wearing a Garde du Corps (GdC) helmet (complete with the massive Hohenzollern Eagle) on the front cover. The Kaiser’s pose is from the waist up. He is also wearing the GdC’s full parade uniform and küraß. The album’s upper left corner sports diagonal stripes in black, white, and red: Germany’s national colors. Below the Kaiser’s likeness is written the gilt title "Postkarten-Album" on the album’s brown surface.

40-350 ALBUMS - PHOTOGRAPHS - POSTCARDS. I found these albums years ago on a buying trip to Germany. They are modern-day productions, but very similar in style to albums used during the Imperial German Period. I only have a few of them left. I wanted to share them with you as they are wonderful for housing postcards and/or photographs. The albums measure 6 1/2" x 8 1/4," and are gray-green with a textured finish. Yes, in some ways they are reminiscent of feldgrau. Each boasts twelve double-sided pages. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to house your postcards and photos, these certainly fit the bill. SPECIAL OFFER: if you buy more than $200.00 of combined postcards and/or photographs, we will throw one of these in for free. This is in addition to receiving the other discounts we are offering for larger orders. Just let us know that you want one! Other wise: $10.00 each

40-611 POSTCARD ALBUM. This is an album that would be useful for postcards or original photographs printed on postcard stock, as was the practice during WW I. It measures 9 5/8" x 8" x 1 1/4," and has a light-colored fabric exterior. It also has a strap which, when secured, will keep the contents safe from exterior damage.
A total of forty-five (45) double-sided pages are inside the album. Each page will hold four postcards (two front and two back) for a total of one hundred-eighty (180) postcards.
This is not a period album, but one that I picked up in Germany a few years ago. It is a great way to store your postcards.

Third Reich Era Photo Albums

40-622 THIRD REICH ERA PHOTO ALBUM. This is a Third Reich-era photo album that I recently unearthed. I cannot say exactly what year in which the photos began, but I believe that some of them were taken in the years before Adolf Hitler assumed power in Germany in 1933. I say this because many of the photos show older men and young men in SA uniforms. The photos show them posing in and around a city, which I believe is Nuremberg. I believe this as some of the photographs were taken at the Nuremberg stadium where many of the really big party rallies were held. I also say pre 1933, as several photographs depict the Graf Zeppelin or the Hindenburg. They are seen without the swastikas on their rudders. They were added AFTER 1933 and the NSDAP’s rise to power.
As the photos progress we see young men who are clearly in the army post 1933, as swastikas begin to appear on their uniforms. Toward the album’s end, one photo shows troops in Russia with a sign dated 1942.
A total of seventy photos of all sizes are included. I believe they cover more than ten years of important German history. The photos include street scenes with Nazi banners and other photos of daily life. $250.00

40-623 WW II ARMY PERSONNEL PHOTO ALBUM. Here is another of the photo albums that I have had for ages, then reached the light of day while we were doing some "house cleaning." This photo album measures 8 ½" x 12." It has a very plain and simple cover. A total of sixty-eight original photographs and one postcard are included. It is the tale of a German Army soldier during 1939-1940 (at least). The photos show him, his brother, and even his father. The photos of his father are both from WW I (Papa served in Infanterie-Regiment Nr 215. We see him in his pickelhaube and with some of his friends), and from the 1930's.
The photos show the German Army during its Blitzkrieg glory days, conquering France. Some photos show French light tanks, cannons (at Verdun), and even a captured or shot-down French airplane.
Some of the photos have come loose from the album and are stuck in on one page, which is as I found it. It is an interesting study of the German Army’s men and equipment in 1940. Many of the photos are described.
$250.00

10-271 PHOTO ALBUM TO A MEMBER OF THE 1st KOMPAGNIE OF THE GARDE-SCHÜTZEN-Bataillon. This is a marvelous oversized album to a man ( who served in the Garde-Schützen Bataillon from 1905-1907. The quality of pre WW I albums like these far exceed war time examples. The cover of the album which measures 14 ½" x 11 ½" is very decorative and ornate. It has a Royal Cypher, a colored regimental standard, and " I. Comp. 1905-1907. Inside the album on the title page is the name of the man, Heinrich Warch) and the basic information on his service. This album was professionally produced and a photograph of him. Inside the album are professional taken photographs of the Officers and Men of the Company. There are a total of twenty three high quality photos (these were not taken by an amateur photographer with a Brownie) within the album but most are of a larger format and are on a page of their own. These larger photos measure 6" x 8" and each are matted on the page to properly frame them. There are several photographs of the men in training and at ease together. The photographs of the Officers are particularly interesting as they represent tremendous uniform studies of what was worn in a Garde-Schützen organization. This unit was a very elite Bataillon that was sponsored by the Hohenzollern household and it was a tremendous honor to serve in it. Included with the album is a document which has the unit rubber stamp on it. It is signed by a Hauptmann who was the Company Commander who states that Warch served well and faithfully since he entered the Company from 1905-1907. It further states that Warch was born in 1886. The binding is a bit loose on the album but with reasonable care the album will offer hours of pleasure. The images are in excellent condition (except for the one photo of Warch which could be in better condition. I don’t often buy photo albums but this one struck me for the quality and the uniqueness of the Company that it represented. $395.00

38-179 PHOTO ALBUM - TELEGRAPH-RADIO ABTEILUNG. This is a photo album for a man who served in a Radio-Telegraph Abteilung during the period of 1908-1909. A total of seventy photographs is in this album. Each of the photos has a written description under it. A fascinating array of photos is in the album. All of the images are original photos of varying sizes, with NO postcards. Individual and group photos of the men who served in the unit are included. One interesting photo appears to be a classroom with a very large radio in it. The photos of the men include enlisted men, NCO’s, and One-Year-Volunteers. Some Christmas photos appear from 1908. Even three photos of early zeppelins from the 1908-09 period show up. $350.00

40-562 PRE WW I PHOTO INFANTRY TROOP ALBUM. This is an intriguing photo album that deals with both prewar and WW I subjects. The album housing the photos is black leatherette and measures 7 3/4" x 5." The front cover displays a silver embossed 1914 Iron Cross. Below that we read "Aus grosser Zeit" (From a Greater Time." The album contains a total of eighty-eight postcard-sized, original photographs. In addition, it has ten postcards. The bulk of the photographs is of individual soldiers or soldier groups in NON combat poses. We see photographs of men from Infanterie-Regiments 68, 95, and 133. We also see men from unidentified Garde-Regiments. Many of the poses deal with hospitals, wounded patients, nurses, and medics. We also see some Kaiser best annual infantry regiment shooting prizes on their uniforms. Several men are wearing shooting lanyards. The postcards cover a variety of topics, again both from before the war and during wartime. [Please keep in mind with a total of ninety-eight photos and postcards, that the cost per photograph/postcard is less than $8.00. Moreover, you have a lovely album (NOTE: some pages are loose) in which to house them as a "bonus." It is a real value! $175.00

40-291 PHOTO ALBUM - SAILOR. Here is a photo album, measuring 9 1/4" x 12 1/2," that holds a total of seventy-two photographs. Fifty-five of them are related to naval activities. The remaining seventeen are, I believe, photographs of the owner's family at home. All the naval photographs are in small-format (3 1/2" x 2 1/2"). The photos include daily onboard and shore activities. After looking at many of the photos, I believe the photographer belonged to a minesweeper flotilla. Some photos of Cruisers or Battleships are also included. Nothing especially exciting appears in the photos. Each one tells its own story, however. They are well worth studying with a magnifying glass. $250.00

40-511 LARGE-FORMAT ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - CAMOUFLAGED HANGER - OBSERVATION BALLOON. This is an original photograph that measures 4 1/2" x 6 1/2." She participated in bombing raids and retired from service in 1916. This shot is looking on at the zeppelin’s bow. She is still on the ground, as her engines are not turning over. 40-413 THREE-PHOTOGRAPH SET - EARLY ZEPPELIN. This is a three-photograph set that shows an early zeppelin as it readies for flight. A name is written on each photograph ‘s reverse, which looks like "Lachmüller," or something similar.

*Nr 1. The photograph measures 4 3/4" x 5 1/4." The zeppelin is tethered to the ground, while its small gondola is on the ground allowing passengers to embark. A large group of military officers and ground crew is on the airfield.

*Nr 2. The photograph measures 4 3/4" x 6 1/4." The zeppelin has just lifted off. The gondola is under it, while the ground crew and observers are watching it take off.

*Nr 3. The photograph measures 6 1/4" x 4 1/2." The zeppelin is in full flight, perhaps 100-200 meters above the ground. Some smoke or a wisp of fog is right under the zeppelin. I do not know or understand its cause, unless it is related to a factory smoke stack in the background.

This is a fine grouping of a very early zeppelin as it goes from being readied for flight, to launch, and to actual flight. $125.00

40-635 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - GERMAN OBSERVATION PLANE. This is a small-format photograph of a German two-seater. It has been captured. A message is written on the side in English. During WW I, it was common to capture enemy airplanes. They were often test-flown to compare them to one’s own airplanes. In some instances, the captured planes were flown in combat AGAINST their former owners! The photo measures 2 3/4" x 1 3/4." It features a German observation plane on the ground. It bears the late war, final edition of the German Cross known as a Balkankreuz, which is far different from the early war’s Iron Cross. The front and rear machine guns are clearly present. On the side of the plane we see in white paint (clearly in English) "Good people don’t shoot!"
The photograph should be filed under "War is a Strange Thing!"

Today we are offering a very special group of ORIGINAL Kaiser Wilhelm II’sand his son Kronprinz Wilhelm’s photographs. The photographs are of assorted sizes (which we specify in each description). Each has been removed from a photograph album and was sold to us by a longtime, more-than-forty-year collector. It is great to find such photographs, especially for the regiments and men involved.  If you wish to purchase more than one, please contact us and we will offer you a better price!

40-581 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM II REVIEWING HIS TROOPS. This is an original photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II reviewing his troops. The photograph is printed on postcard stock. The Kaiser is seated on his horse to the photograph’s left. He is wearing a spiked helmet with parade feathers. A large body of troops is marching in front of him. $30.00

40-571 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM II AND KRONPRINZ WILHELM SEATED IN CARRIAGE. This original photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kronprinz measures 2 7/8" x 3 3/4." It shows the two men seated in a carriage. The coachman is seated directly behind them. The Kaiser is in full dress uniform for 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1. His son, the Kronprinz, is wearing the dress uniform of 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. Both men are wearing medals and breast stars.  This is a good, clear close-up of them. It has been removed from a photo album. $50.00rsMarch17

40-574 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KRONPRINZ WILHELM IN 1. LEIB-HUSAREN-REGIMENT Nr 1'S UNIFORM. This is an original photograph, measuring 3 3/16" x 4 5/8," which features young Kronprinz Wilhelm. He is in 1.Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1's full dress uniform. One usually sees the Kronprinz in the uniforms of the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1, Küraßier-Regiment-Königin (Pommersches) Nr 2, or 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. [Interestingly, his mother Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria was the Regimental Chef of the aforementioned Küraßier Regiment]. More often than not, however, he was in the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1's uniform. It was the regiment with which he was most identified.
Here, Kronprinz Wilhelm stands on a reception stand, with many military and civilian officials around him. A man in a top hat is moving toward the reviewing stand to go up four steps to meet the Kronprinz. On the photograph’s left, another officer is in the Kronprinz’s regimental uniform. The latter is in feldgrau. I am guessing that he is the Kronprinz’s adjutant.
It is a fine photograph that has been removed from a photograph album.

40-575 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM II AT STABLE WATCHING ENLISTED MAN GROOM HORSES. I really like this photograph, measuring 3" x 4 1/8," which is more candid shot of the Kaiser than we often see. He stands in an open stable yard, at the photograph’s far left. He is dressed in the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1's uniform.
We see approximately six enlisted men wearing their summer (white) work uniforms. Several truly magnificent horses are present. On the far right, we see another officer looking on.
The photograph’s lower left corner shows it was taken by a photographer from the Tigenhof area, located in East Prussia. (It is part of Poland today). It has been removed from a photograph album and given a cardboard backing.

40-563 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KRONPRINZ WILHELM & FFA 34'S AVIATION OFFICER. This is an original photograph that measures 5 ½" x 3 ½." It was printed on postcard stock, but should NOT be confused with a postcard. It shows Kronprinz Wilhelm. He is dressed in the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1's uniform and Schirmmütze. The Totenkopf is clearly visible at the cap’s front. He appears to be on what may be a landing field’s edge. Three other officers accompany him. The most visible is wearing a long leather coat with a fur-lined collar. The reverse has a note written in black ink stating that the Kronprinz appears in the photograph with an F.F.A. 34 (Feld Flieger Abteilung 34) Fliegerleutnant (I cannot decipher his last name). It was an observation squadron, so the officer might have been a pilot or an observer. [While an FFA was primarily an observation squadron, it was common practice in 1915-1916 to attach single-seaters to these units. Oswald Boelcke and Max Immelmann got their start flying single-seaters like this before jastas were established as stand-alone, single-seater "Hunting Squadrons]." This is a fine photograph for any collection. If you can make out the "Fliegerleutnant’s" name, you may be able to research him. $50.00

40-382 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KAISERIN ZITA - EIGHT CHILDREN. This is an original photograph that features Austrian Kaiserin Zita, the former Princess of Parma (1892-1989). She married Archduke Karl (1887-1922), who was second in line to the Austrian throne. With the 1914 assassination of his uncle, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Karl moved to first-in-line. When his grand uncle, Emperor Franz Josef died in November 1916, Karl became Kaiser Karl. He retained the title until 1918. He and his family were sent into exile for fear that an Austrian monarchy would resume. Karl died in 1922, when his wife, the Kaiserin, was pregnant with their eighth child. This photograph shows Zita with her eight children listening to the radio. Zita’s last child, Archduchess Elisabeth, was born in May 1922, and here appears to be in the five-to-six-year-old range. Thus, I date the photograph to circa 1930. Zita never remarried. The photograph was taken by H. Schuhmann, an Austrian photographic firm in Vienna. Their embossed name appears in the picture’s lower right corner.  This photograph measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2". $25.00

40-196 COLOR CABINET PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM II. This is a very striking large-format color cabinet photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2." From his appearance in the photograph, it is fairly early in his reign. He is wearing a general of Hussars’ pelisse. If you look carefully, instead of shearling at his collar and down the tunic’s center you will see fur, perhaps ermine. On his tunic he is wearing a large medal bar, breast star, and a collar for Hohenzollern House Order. He is also wearing the Golden Adjutant’s Badge to the Kaiser, so it is entirely possible that the photograph was actually taken while he was the Kronprinz! It is a very high quality photograph that shows a lot of detail. $95.00

20-144 PORTRAIT CABINET PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM I AT VARIOUS AGES. This is an unusual, high-quality, cabinet photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm I. 40-541 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - KÖNIG LUDWIG III INSPECTING FELDLUFTSCHIFFER ABTEILUNG Nr 65. This original photograph, measuring 4 5/16" x 3 1/8," shows Bavaria’s King Ludwig III. He and his staff (including two generals behind him) are reviewing a large officers’ group for inspection. All of the men are wearing pickelhauben, which I consider intriguing, as you will see. The reverse reveals that the photograph was taken by a Luftschiffer Abteilung Nr 65 photographer on 7 February 1918. I wonder why they would be wearing the discarded headdress so late in the war. Was it for ceremonial purposes? Whatever the reason, Ludwig would be King for only nine more months. $25.00

This is an original cabinet photograph of Generalfeldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke (1800-1891), one of Germany’s greatest military commanders and thinkers. Von Moltke was a brilliant organizer and tactician. He helped mold Prussia’s Army into Germany’s finest. He, along with Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and König Wilhelm I, masterminded Germany’s unification and fought the wars that made Prussia the power behind the reunited German Army. He was the Chief of the German Staff for more than thirty years. He organized and directed Prussia’s Army in three wars. In the end, Germany had the best army in Europe and, perhaps, the world. The photograph measures 6 5/8" x 4 1/4." It shows the old general wearing his uniform, complete with a Generalfeldmarschall’s shoulder boards. He is also wearing the 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross around his neck. The reverse reveals that the photograph was produced by one of Wilhelm I’s official house photographers. $95.00

20-149 PHOTOGRAPH AND GLASS NEGATIVE - KAISER WILHELM II. This is an interesting original photograph and glass negative of Kaiser Wilhelm II. While I am not a photographic historian, I believe it was sometime around the turn of the 20th Century when glass negatives gave way to film negatives. (Now that we have digital cameras, negatives themselves are becoming rarer)! The photograph shows the Kaiser in the uniform of a German Army Generalfeldmarschall. He is standing on an estate’s lawn with two older women, and a younger woman accompanied by two very young girls dressed in their Sunday finest. I believe one of the older women is the Empress. While I cannot be certain, I have a hunch from the Kaiser’s age that this photograph may have been taken at Haus Doorn, his exiled home in the Netherlands. It is also possible that the photo was taken in the last year of the war in Germany.
The photo measures 1 3/4" x 6 1/2." The glass negative measures 1 3/4" x 6 1/2." The negative has a crack that runs the complete distance of the negative, from left to right. While cracked, it does hang together. It needs to be handled with great care.

22-87 LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPH FROM SAXON INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 101/RESERVE-KOMPAGNIE Nr 9 IN CHINA. This is an unusually large-format photograph (12 3/8" x 19 1/4") of Kompagnie Nr 9 (the regiment’s Reserve-Kompagnie) from Königl. Sächs 2. Grenadier-Regiment Nr 101 Kaiser Wilhelm (I), König von Preußen. The regiment was formed in 1670. It was garrisoned at Saxony’s capital city, Dresden, and attached to the XII. Armeekorps. It is interesting to note from the photograph that the Kompagnie was serving in China from 1899 to 1901. They would have been present during the Boxer Rebellion. It is a marvelous photograph that is a true boon to a uniform study. It features seventy-four different men. We see a number of different uniforms, headdress forms, etc. The men are holding several signs to indicate their years of Chinese service.
I honestly cannot remember a photograph this large being taken of any unit. All you Colonial and Saxon collectors, this is a must for your collection.

38-187 ORIGINAL GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - 30+ MEN ATTACHED TO NAVAL ARTILLERY. This is just a wonderful group photograph of about 30 men (and one dog). Those of you who enjoy looking for details in photographs will really like this one. Start with the sailors who are pairing their jumpers and mutzes with feldgrau trousers! Have a look at the front row, and you will see five officers and one NCO. You will see a collection of feldgrau uniforms and visor caps. The visor caps have Navy Officers’ badges and are feldgrau. That is rare stuff. It is both difficult and expensive to find one of those today. On the photo’s reverse is a unit stamp for the 3rd Navy Artillery-Regiment. $45.00

Imperial German Air Service

40-197 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - MAX IMMELMANN’S FUNERAL. Max Immelmann (1890-1916) was among the first super heroes of the Imperial German Air Service. He, along with Oswald Boelcke, was the first of the German aviators to receive the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916. By June 1916, Immelmann was dead. This original photograph, which measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2," shows Immelmann’s funeral procession. His flag-covered casket can be seen being pulled through the streets on a caisson. A large number of German troops are in front and behind his casket. If you look directly behind the caisson, you will note an officer carrying Immelmann’s Ordenkissen (Awards’ Pillow), displaying the decorations he received while alive. The men also carry a number of floral displays. Such scenes were reenacted frequently as WW I progressed and Germany honored her fallen heroes. Immelmann is often remembered for two reasons. First, an aerial maneuver named for him (the Immelmann Turn) is still used by aviators today. Second, the PLM was popularly nicknamed "The Blue Max" in his honor. $45.00jbApril17

I am sure the photo was taken on the ground rather than in the air, but the two men are bundled up and equipped as though they were in the air. 40-525 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - PARACHUTE TEST - DUMMY. This is an original photograph measuring 4" x 5 3/4." When I first saw it, I was appalled that it depicted an aviator who had plunged to his death while using a parachute. [Parachute usage was not overly common in the German Air Service, although they were used later in the war. Ernst Udet successfully used a parachute to bail out of a Fokker D. VIII]. Then I looked a bit more closely, and saw a few things that did not add up. The head looked odd and the arms appeared unusual in the way they were attached to the torso. Finally, I turned the postcard over. On the reverse was a description that referred to a parachute and a dummy! The parachute is draped over a hedge, while the puppet lies spreadeagled on the ground. $25.00

38-325 SMALL ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DORNIER DO-X. This is a small private photo of the Dornier DO-X Seaplane, which was built by Germany in the 1920's. At the time, it was the largest seaplane in the world. It was a high-wing monoplane, carrying SIX engines with pusher/puller propellers. Friedrich Christiansen, a naval ace and PLM-winner from WW I, was the DO-X’s chief pilot, who gained great attention. Christiansen went on to join the new Luftwaffe and became a general in WW II. He was one of the last PLM-winners to live into the 1960's. The photo measures 2" x 3." It shows a ground crew working on the aircraft at it is tied up to a dock. 16-99 PAGE FROM A PHOTO ALBUM THAT SHOWS MEMBERS OF JG 77 FROM POST WORLD WAR II GERMANY. The legend of Manfred von Richthofen has been an important part of the German Air Force since he burst on the scene in 1916. He became more revered after his death in 1918. When the Luftwaffe was formed in the 1930's, a Jagdgeschwader (JG) was named in his honor. The men of this fighter wing proudly wore a cuff title attesting to this fact. There was also a special cuff title for the men who had fought in JG 1 with von Richthofen during WW I. Being a part of the "old guard" was an honor and a distinction, which Hermann Göring wanted to make sure was known to all who saw these men in uniform. When WW II ended, the Luftwaffe and the German military were abolished. It was not until the 1950's, with the perceived threat of the USSR and other members of the Eastern Bloc, that the German military was reestablished. When the German Air Force was reinstituted, it was equipped with U.S. fighter aircraft. Initially, that was the legendary F-86 "Saber Jet," which fought so well in Korea in the early 1950's. When Germany was flying again, it was natural for Manfred von Richthofen to be honored (as he had been in WW I and WW II) by having a JG named for him. This became JG 77, which today is still an important part of the German Air Force. It is still an honor to be attached to this unit. Today, we offer a single page from a photo album that has four original photographs. The first photo shows an F-86 with German markings and a shield with an "R" in it. This tells us, of course, that this plane was attached to JG 77, the von Richthofen JG. In a second photograph, we see an officer giving a briefing. He has on the wings of the Air Force, along with a ribbon bar. A third photo shows two officers at attention. Both were clearly heavily decorated in WW II--one man has two ribbon bars and one has three! The final photo shows two young officers along with a wife or girlfriend making a "repair" to a uniform. I have had this page for quite awhile. I look at it often, appreciating the tradition that the "Rote Kampfflieger" brought to the German Air Force. This man, who flew a plane that was little more than a kite with an engine 85 years ago, is still revered and honored by the young men who follow in his footsteps. $65.00

40-604 SECOND GENERATION PHOTOGRAPH: GENERALFELDMARSCHALL AUGUST von MACKENSEN. This is a second-generation photograph of one of Germany’s best-known generals during WW I. August von Mackensen was closely identified with 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1. He was often seen wearing the regiment’s full uniform. In this photo he is wearing the regiment’s attila. His 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class appears on the tunic. If you look closely, you can see that he is also wearing an 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class with Oak Leaves in the tunic’s buttonhole. He is wearing a Black Eagle Breast Star on his left breast. His Orden Pour le Mérite is around his neck beside the 1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. 40-211 MATTED PHOTOGRAPH - SOLDIER HONORING HIS SERVICE IN WW I. This is lovely matted presentation of a soldier that honors his service during WW I. The presentation measures 18” x 14.” It has a plain, beige cardboard outer matting that surrounds another highly decorated matte, a cardboard screen-like section that displays the lettering, then another decorated cardboard frame within the screen section that finally surrounds the photograph itself. Each of the decorated matte’s four corners displays a likeness of the 1914 Iron Cross. Between the Iron Crosses on the sides runs a motif of holly berries and green leaves, along with a high-relief sword and a shield featuring the Hohenzollern Eagle. The top and bottom feature green oak leaves, with high-relief crossed cannons. In the center is the soldier’s photograph. He is wearing a pickelhaube and standing at attention, in what is a studio pose. A special high-relief cardboard “frame” surrounds the photograph, which is set on a beige-painted, screen-like material that is hand-lettered with a sentiment. Directly below the framed photo is another Iron Cross. The sentiment reads “Im Schweren Kampf und Kriegesnot hat mich beschützt der liebe Gott. (In serious battle and war’s distress, I am protected by God’s Love).” Two stars have been hand painted to the left and right of the photograph. Obviously, it was put together by someone who loved this soldier deeply. If you look closely this may have been the basis for a needle point work but was not completed. A small break appears in the right portion of the matte. It is very attractive and would make a captivating display. $95.00

40-458 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - MEN - QUARTERS - RECRUIT DEPOT - FUß-ARTILLERIE-REGIMENT Nr 3 - BAVARIA. I simply love looking at postcards and original photographs. It is fun doing a little bit of detective work to see what can be learned. In this case, we have an original photograph of several enlisted men and NCO’s gathered in their quarters. One of the men is wearing a pickelhaube. With a magnifying glass one can see that his wappen is Bavarian. The cancelled marks on the photo’s reverse reveal it is from a Recruiting Depot of new men in training. The group is from Fuß-Artillerie-Regiment Nr 3, a Bavarian unit. It was mailed in 1915. [I find describing photos and postcards a lot fun and very entertaining. It is a good break from the more "intense" items that we offer to you. It also represents a wonderful opportunity to learn and do some snooping. Postcards and photos are a fine way to stretch your collecting dollars. They make wonderful displays highlighting the "hard" items presented with them. So, have fun]! $10.00

This photo is from the period of 1909/1910 and shows the officers, NCO’s and enlisted men of the Kompagnie. This is a great uniform study, as it shows some men wearing mutzes and some men wearing pickelhauben. The officers and NCO’s are wearing visor caps. Have a look at the Kompagnie commander in the center. He has one Daschund sitting on his lap and another at his feet! An extra piece identifies every man in the photo and names the group as "Reserve der 1. Kompagnie Pommerschen Train-Bataillons No 2." $50.00

38-126 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH- INFANTRIE-DIVISION Nr 23. This is an ORIGINAL photograph that has been produced on postcard stock. It is an early war photograph, and shows an interesting contrast among the uniforms of the nine men depicted. The photograph was sent by Feldpost to a loved one back home. From its stampings, it appears that the men belonged to Infantrie-Regiment Nr 281, which was assigned to Infantrie-Division Nr 23. The date on the reverse is 1912, which I find confusing as this certainly appears to be a wartime pose. $20.00

12-32 STUDIO PORTRAIT. Of soldiers and sailors were very popular during WW I. The smaller versions were referred to as CdV's (Carte de Visite). Often the smaller CdV's, which were about 2" x 3", were printed in larger sizes and then might be enhanced with ink, charcoal, or even colorized. This is a photo of a soldier with his Pickelhaube and his Mauser. It has been enhanced with ink or pencil. The photo is 14" x 18" and the matted image is 17" x 21." 40-252 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - YOUNG BOY - KINDER ULANEN-REGIMENT UNIFORM. This is a most interesting original photograph that shows the Germans’ interest in kinder military uniforms. The young boy, whom I would estimate to be ten to twelve-years-old, is dressed as an Ulanen. It is not a total recreation of the complete uniform, but it is close enough! He is wearing a tschapka, ulanka, and sword. He even has a lance with a pennant. All of it is scaled-down to fit the youngster. The photo has suffered a fold in its right upper corner. The photo of the young man remains compelling. You have to wonder, did he grow up to become an Ulanen? $30.00

They are recent students as well, as one can see by their caps, tschakos, etc., coupled with the "medals" they are wearing. It is dated 1904. It was mailed from Döberitz, where the photograph was taken. $5.00

38-316 GROUP PHOTOGRAPH OF A GARDE-DRAGONER-REGIMENT. This is an original photograph of a large group of men from a Garde-Dragoner-Regiment. Most of them are NCO’s, with a small smattering of enlisted men. Most of the men are wearing visor caps or mutzes. Two of the men are wearing pickelhauben, which is our key to identifying this as a Garde-Dragoner-Regiment. Please note the squared front visor, a sure mark of a dragoon. One of the men is wearing a shooting lanyard, and has a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class looped in his buttonhole. The photo is dated 1915. $15.00

While this regiment was nominally Prussian, Bataillons Nr 1 and Nr 3 came from Bremen. His shoulder strap is clearly visible, and if you look carefully at his mutze, you can see a Bremen kokarde rather than a Prussian on it. The photo measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/8." 12-33 STUDIO PORTRAIT. This photo features two soldiers standing with their Mausers. One has a fixed bayonet. Both are wearing pickelhauben and one of them is from the 55th Infantry Regiment. The photo is 19 3/8" x 15 5/8" and is also hand colored. The matte is very decorative and on two sides has furled flags, rifles, and cannons. The size of the matte is 21" x 17 1/4". Above the soldiers on the matte there is a variation of the furled flag with an Iron Cross. On the matte is the inscription "In remembrance from the World War 1914-15." This is a truly interesting matte. Regrettably there is a piece of the lower left corner that has been torn off, but does not affect any of the motifs or the inscription. [Extra shipping is required due to the size of the portrait].  $100.00

38-401 LARGE FORMAT COLORIZED PAINTING - ARTILLERY REGIMENT SOLDIER. This is a large-format, colorized painting of an enlisted man in a Prussian artillery regiment. It measures 15 3/4" x 12," and would look quite impressive framed. The man is wearing a kugelhelm, but in place of its service ball, he is wearing a white parade bush. No number appears on his shoulder straps, just the artillery’s flaming grenade. The white bush and his tunic’s collar indicate that he probably served in one of the Garde-Artillerie-Regiments. It is mounted on cardboard backing, so even if you decide not to frame it, you can still display it. $45.00

12-425 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - GERMAN CEMETERY. This is a very touching original photograph that was once part of a photo album. It shows a German cemetery in France. One sees several graves in the cemetery with quite ordinary crosses. Then one has a very elaborate metal plaque which identifies the fallen soldier as Gefr. Gustav Niegsch. He was killed on 29 December 1915. He was assigned to Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich der Große (3. Ostpreußisches) Nr 4. This was a very elite regiment founded in 1626 during the reign of Friedrich the Great. Also inscribed on the plaque is the phrase "Rest Softly in Enemy Soil." 40-125 CdV - ENLISTED SAILOR - S. M. S. EITEL FRIEDRICH. The S. M. S. Prinz Eitel Friedrich was first placed in service in 1904 as a passenger ship. When WW I broke out in 1914, she was at Tsingtau in China. She was converted to a Hilfskreuzer (Auxiliary Cruiser). In this role she captured eleven ships. When she ran low on coal, she entered the American port of New Port News, Virginia. The ship was interned since the U.S. was neutral at that point. Once the U.S. declared war, she was converted for use as a troop ship, taking American troops to France for the fight against Germany. After WW I ended she was briefly used as a passenger ship again, then scrapped in the 1920's. This is a CdV which measures 4 3/4" x 2." It depicts a young sailor who served on that ship. We actually have two of these. You can have one for $25.00 or both for $45.00

Imperial German Army

40-49 CdV - GENERALFELDMARSCHALL GRAF von WERDER. Generalfeldmarschall Graf August von Werder (1808-1887) was one of the Prussian Army’s leading generals. He began his service in the Regiment der Garde du Corps in 1825. He also served the following year in 1. Garde Regiment zu Fuß. He achieved the rank of generalmajor in 1863. He fought in the consolidation wars of 1864 against Schleswig-Holstein, and in 1866 against Saxony. In the latter war he was a generalleutnant, commanding a division at Königgratz. He was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite on 20 September 1866. When war came between Germany in and France in 1870, von Werder was the commander of the XIV. ArmeeKorps. He was a central player in the swift German victory over the French forces, and was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Orden Pour le Mérite on 18 January 1871. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, he was awarded the 1870 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class. He was also one of SEVEN men to receive the 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross on 22 March 1871. In this ORIGINAL CdV, which measures 4 1/8" x 2 1/2," we see him in full dress uniform. He is seen wearing his Grand Cross of the Iron Cross and his PLM. Further, he is wearing a large medal bar, his 1870 EK 1, Breast Stars, etc. Along with the CdV we will include an abstract of his military career, indicating ranks, assignments, and decorations. Von Werder is remembered as one of Germany’s finest generals. He fought in three wars that set Germany on her path to glory and recognition as a world power. $195.00

40-80 ENLISTED MAN CdV - 1. GARDE-REGIMENT zu FUß. This is an outstanding CdV of an enlisted man that measures 5" x 2 1/2." He served in the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. It was the most elite infantry regiment in the Prussian Army. It was to infantry regiments what the Regiment der Garde du Corps was to the cavalry. If anything, the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß was even more elite, as all princes of the House of Hohenzollern were enrolled in it. The CdV shows the man wearing an overcoat draped over his tunic. He is wearing his white parade belt and buckle. He is also wearing his pickelhaube, with white parade bush, indicating that he served in either Bataillon Nr 1 or Bataillon Nr 2. Most interesting of all, on a table to the man’s left stands his mitre. The photograph was taken at a studio in Potsdam, where the regiment was garrisoned. This makes a magnificent uniform study. $60.00

38-382 CdV - ONE-YEAR-VOLUNTEER - FELDGRAU - HUSAREN-REGIMENT Nr 15 - PRUSSIA. This is an interesting CdV of a One-Year-Volunteer in Husaren-Regiment Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande (Hannoverisches) Nr 15. Although it served as a Prussian regiment, it was originally a Hanoverian regiment. It was absorbed into the Prussian Army in 1866. The regiment was founded in 1803. It was garrisoned in Wandesbek, and assigned to the IX. Armeekorps. This was a very elite regiment. On their tschapkas, the men carried the bandeaux for "Peninsula," "Waterloo," "El Bodon," and "Barossa." The CdV measures 4 3/4" x 2." While I cannot determine his regiment, the man is wearing a feldgrau uniform and a mutze. This is a difficult combination to find in a CdV. The photo was taken at a photographic shop in Wandesbek, where the regiment was garrisoned. $35.00

40-21 NCO’S CdV - FELDARTILLERIE-REGIMENT Nr 60 - MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN. This is an NCO’s CdV, measuring 4 3/4" x 2 1/4," from Großherzogl. Mecklenburg. Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr 60. The regiment was founded in 1899. It was garrisoned at Schwerin, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The regiment was attached to the IX. ArmeeKorps. The man is wearing his visor cap and an enlisted man/NCO’s belt and buckle from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. His shoulder straps’ cyphers can clearly be seen. It is a pity, but the CdV has a fold in it. This has been taken into consideration in the price. The photograph was taken in Neustrelitz, which was the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. $15.00

If you look at the table behind the man, you can see his pickelhaube, with white parade bush. Only this Bataillon of the regiment had a white bush. The other two had black. $25.00

12-350 CARTE de Visite - SOLDIER. The Carte de Visite (CdV) was a very popular art form for young men in the military both in Europe and in the U.S. from 1860 until WW I. The smallest format of the photographer’s art, the CdV typically measured 2 ½" x 4". This particular example probably dates from 1890 to 1910. It portrays a young soldier who was a musician, most likely at the regimental level. The musician- identifying "swallows nest" can be clearly seen on his right shoulder. While I cannot see his shoulder straps to identify his regiment, I can say that this photograph was taken in the studio of a photographer in Augsburg. Thus, this young man may have been a Bavarian. The name of the photographer can be seen on both the obverse and the reverse. $10.00
