This is a spike helmet for an officer in Grenadier Regiment 4 in the 1911 – 1914 period. Officially it was known as Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich der Große (3. Ostpreußches) Nr 4. This regiment was founded in 1626 and was garrisoned at Rastenberg in East Prussia, where it was attached to the Prussian I. Armeekorp. . The helmet originally took the Heraldic Eagle with the shorter wings and FWR on its breast. A large banner above the eagle inscribed with the number “1626 was awarded by AKO on 6 Nov 1888, to commemorate the date that the regiment was activated. Grenadier-Regiment Nr 4 was the oldest regiment in the Imperial Army, and the Kaiser chose to honor the unit with the addition of its activation date on its helmet plate. The short winged style plate was worn until 1 May 1911 when it was replaced with the wide winged Grenadier Eagle shown on this helmet.
