    Rudolf Windisch (1897-1918) had one of the more interesting stories of aviators of WW I. After pilot training he was assigned to an observation squadron. In a daring move he and his observer Maximilian von Cossel blew up a bridge when von Cossel was dropped off to pull of this daring act. Both were personally decorated by Kaiser Wilhelm II with Windisch receiving the Prussian Crown Order 4th Class with Swords….

He was severely wounded several times during the war and was killed in fighting in Hamburg during the Freikorps period….

    This postcard shows the monument to Kaiserin Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898). Affectionately known as “Sissi,” she was Kaiser Franz Josef’s wife. She was born in Bavaria as a princess. Franz Josef’s life was filled with tragedy. First, his son Crown Prince Rudolf killed himself. Then in 1898, while visiting Italy, Sissi was assassinated. As if that were not enough, Franz Josef’s new heir, Franz Ferdinand, was himself assassinated in June 1914, which touched off WW I. The monument to Sissi was erected in Vienna (Wien). The postcard has been mailed.

    This is a color postcard that comes from a painting. It shows several British ships involved in a naval action along with the German ship S. M. S. Königin Luise. Explosions are going off in the water, and the ship in the foreground has been hit. The postcard is sponsored by the Erbprinzessin (Hereditary Princess) Leopold von Anhalt. The painting was done by Professor Hans Rudolf Schulze. A message is written on the reverse dated 8 December 1915.
