The Pickelhaube

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of Imperial German military history is the Pickelhaube, or spiked helmet. Originally designed in the 1840s for the Prussian army, the Pickelhaube quickly became a popular symbol of military power throughout the German Empire. It was worn by officers and enlisted men alike, and was often customized with unique features and decorations.

One particularly interesting example from our collection is a Pickelhaube worn by a Bavarian cavalry officer during World War I. The helmet features a distinctive brass eagle emblem on the front, as well as a black and white plume and a silver spike. It's fascinating to imagine the stories and experiences of the officer who wore this helmet into battle.

Medals and Decorations

Another important aspect of Imperial German militaria is the various medals and decorations awarded to soldiers for their service and bravery. From the Iron Cross to the Pour le Mérite, these medals represent not only individual accomplishments, but also the larger history of the German military during this time.

One of the most intriguing items in our collection is a rare Pour le Mérite awarded to a German fighter pilot during World War I. The medal, which features a distinctive blue and white enamel design, was only awarded to a select few individuals for exceptional service and valor. It's a testament to the courage and sacrifice of these pilots, and a poignant reminder of the cost of war.

Uniforms and Equipment

Of course, no collection of Imperial German militaria would be complete without a range of uniforms, weapons, and other equipment used by soldiers during this period. From the distinctive blue and gray uniforms worn by Prussian infantry to the Mauser rifles and artillery used in battle, these items give us a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers and officers during this era.

One particularly interesting item from our collection is a complete set of infantry equipment used by a German soldier during World War I. The set includes a leather belt, ammunition pouches, canteen, and gas mask, among other items. It's a remarkable example of the care and attention to detail that went into outfitting soldiers for battle, and a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the German military during this time.
