  • AUSTRIA - PILOT BADGE - 2nd MODEL (1917) - KAISER KARL

    AUSTRIA – PILOT BADGE – 2nd MODEL (1917) – KAISER KARL

    SKU: 01-900 XMB

    $1,195.00

AUSTRIA – PILOT BADGE – 2nd MODEL (1917) – KAISER KARL. It is the 2nd and final model of the Austrian Field Pilot Badge, which was authorized on 2 October 1917. It is of delicate design. At the badge’s top are the Austrian Crown and the Hungarian Crown. Below that is an eagle in flight. At its bottom is a “K” in a white shield, which is for Austria’s final Kaiser, Karl. A VERY high-quality, green, enameled wreath surrounds the badge. The badge’s reverse displays the manufacturer’s hallmark “Zimbler Wien VII” for Vienna’s premiere Austrian badge and decoration maker. [Just as C.E. Juncker was Prussia’s leading flight-badge maker, Zimbler was at the same level in Austria]. Two spring hooks also appear on the reverse. This was a unique Austrian method of securing flight badges to a tunic. [Doing so would have necessitated using two sewn-in vertical loops on one’s tunic]. This Austrian Pilot badge is seen far less frequently than the 1st model, which was in use for Kaiser Franz Josef until his death in 1916. It is in excellent condition. This is a consignment item. EGYPT – FRAMED PAINTING – ZEPPELIN

    SKU: 21-125

    $895.00

The zeppelins Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg made voyages that touched a great portion of the earth. One of their more celebrated voyages included passing over the deserts of Egypt and the pyramids. Today we offer a period painting that shows one of the Zeppelins achieving this feat. The frame is a period, burled wood. The entire framed display measures 16 1/2″ x 24.” No glass covers the painting, which measures 14″ x 21 3/4.” The painting depicts the zeppelin flying over the Great Sphinx and between two pyramids. In the foreground are a party of Egyptians and camels. This naively styled painting is signed by the artist. If you are a zeppelin collector, this will certainly enhance your wall and your collection.

ENGLAND – POCKET WATCH – 18th CENTURY ENGLISH SKELETON POCKET WATCH

    SKU: 39-41 XMG

    $5,795.00

ENGLAND – POCKET WATCH – 18th CENTURY ENGLISH SKELETON POCKET WATCH While I am no expert on pocket watches,  let me share what I do know about this pocket watch. The watch was manufactured in England during the period of 1750-1775. It is very likely that it came to this country before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. It is a smaller pocket watch than we normally see. The case measures 2″ in diameter. The watch face is made of porcelain. The hours are marked on it with hand painted Roman numerals, as well as painted numbers in the increment of five. If you look between the III and IV numerals, you will see where you wind this watch. It was a common spot for winding during this period and for this particular watch. One opens the watch’s front half, which houses the glass shield, inserts the key and winds. The key IS present and the watch fully functions. The time is set by moving the minute and hour hands like one would on a grandfather clock. As we examine the case, we see an interesting hand-etched design. (PLEASE NOTE: the case is made of GOLD). From the looks of it I would say that it is 18K. A fine jump ring (for lack of a better term) is attached to the watch top. Attach a pocket watch chain to it and the watch can be tucked in a pocket. The reverse sports another glass cover that exposes the watch’s…

BOOK – ABOVE AND BEYOND: THE AVIATION MEDALS OF HONOR BY BARRETT TILMANN. The Medal of Honor, once known as the Congressional Medal of Honor, is the highest award that the United States can confer on a soldier, sailor (from the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Coast Guard), marine, or airman. Like Great Britain’s Victoria Cross, it is awarded to personnel of ALL ranks, not just officers (as was Prussia’s Pour le Mérite). The Medal of Honor was first awarded during the U.S. Civil War. Since its inception, it has been awarded 3,515 times (621 times posthumously). This book was first published in 2002, and covers aviation Medal of Honor winners from WW I, WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam. The U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy all have had famous aviation winners. The book features all of them and includes many interesting photos of the pilots and their planes. U.S. – BOOK – BLUE-EYED CHILD OF FORTUNE: THE CIVIL WAR LETTERS OF COLONEL ROBERT GOULD SHAW EDITED BY RUSSELL DUNCAN

    SKU: 12-825

    $25.00

BOOK – BLUE-EYED CHILD OF FORTUNE: THE CIVIL WAR LETTERS OF COLONEL ROBERT GOULD SHAW EDITED BY RUSSELL DUNCAN. This is American Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw’s (1837-1863) interesting story. Shaw’s life and death were immortalized in the hit 1989 movie Glory, which starred Matthew Broderick as Shaw. Robert Gould Shaw was born to one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts and grew up in Boston and New York. He traveled extensively abroad and spent two years at Harvard. He and his family were staunch abolitionists. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 he enlisted in a regiment from New York as a private, then later served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry. While with that regiment, he participated in battles at Winchester, Cedar Mountain, and Antietam. Later, when Massachusetts raised the first all-black infantry regiment, the 54th Massachusetts, his father urged him to take its command and Shaw did so. After its training was complete, the regiment was sent to South Carolina. On 18 July 1863 his regiment, along with two brigades of white troops, assaulted the Confederate positions at Battery Wagner. Shaw was mortally wounded at the head of his troops. The attack ultimately failed and Battery Wagner was never captured. The 54th Massachusetts suffered more than 50% casualties. As an insult, the Confederates buried Shaw in a mass grave with his soldiers. His family back North instead considered it an honor that also honored them. Robert Gould Shaw was twenty-five at the…

This is a soft cover book that was written in 1998. The Medal of Honor or Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest decoration given by the U.S. to its soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Like the Victoria Cross, and unlike the Pour le Mérite, it was awarded regardless of rank. It could be awarded to privates and generals alike. It was awarded for a specific act of bravery. It was established in 1861 and was awarded during the War Between the States (Civil War), and is still awarded to this day. The book concentrates on the aviators of WW I. It concentrates on eight men who received it during the brief time that the U.S. participated in WW I. Perhaps the best-known of the awardees are Frank Luke and Eddie Rickenbacker. The book is liberally illustrated with many fine photographs.

U.S. – BOOK – MICKEY MOUSE BOOK: MICKEY SAILS TO TREASURE ISLAND

    SKU: 12-777

    $95.00

Here is a Special Blast From the Past! Mickey Mouse is a worldwide icon and the “face” of the Walt Disney Company, Inc. International sensation Mickey first emerged in 1928’s famous cartoon “Steamboat Willie.” He went on to appear in a cartoon strip series and has appeared in countless cartoons and movies. During the 1930’s, Whitman (a division of the Western Publishing Company) developed an inexpensive paperback book series for children, the Big Little Books® (BLB’s). The Walt Disney Studio was the first company to license their comic characters with Whitman for inclusion in the BLB’s. In 1935, the book series included this thrilling tale about Mickey Mouse and his adventure sailing to Treasure Island. The vintage book has Mickey walking the plank and being grabbed by a gorilla. Keeping with the BLB’s commitment to printing bulky but small paperbacks that could be easily handled and read by young children, Mickey Sails to Treasure Island measures 3 ½” x 4 ½” x 5/8,” and consists of 192 pages. Several illustrations are included that will be sure to bring back fond childhood memories of the famous mouse. [Please note that this book was published a mere seven years after Mickey first burst on the screen]. Interestingly, the BLB’s were given away as premiums distributed by stores, gas stations, food products, and radio programs. Our find was sponsored by Kolynos dental cream. Kolynos was created in 1908 and sponsored several well-known radio programs and book series during the Depression era. Kolynos was…

U.S. – BOOK – STEEL POTS – BY CHRIS ARMOLD

    SKU: 12-817

    $95.00

BOOK – STEEL POTS – BY CHRIS ARMOLD. This fascinating book chronicles the USA’s military’s use of steel helmets, which began with WW I. At that time, the USA adopted Great Britain’s primary helmet, continuing its use into WW II’s early days, when a new version was introduced. While the previous sentence sums up the essential history of “steel pots,” the author goes far beyond mere basics by covering the years between the two World Wars and details some of the U.S. Army’s experimental helmets from the period. The latter spearheaded the relatively quick transition from the 1917’s helmet to the style used during WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam. The author discusses the helmet currently used by all US Armed Forces, which are now made of Kevlar™ to provide greater protection from bullets and shrapnel (the same material used for police and military forces’ body armor). Kevlar helmets also are far lighter and cooler to wear. [If you look at the USA’s current helmet, you will note that it is very similar to Germany’s WW I and WW II stahlhelme. American troops often refer to their helmets as “Fritz.”] The book has 270+ photographs (both color and black and white, as well as sketches and graphs detailing the helmets’ evolution). While not Imperial German, it is comprehensive and makes for good reading. [Let me include a word about its author, Chris Armold. Chris is a retired senior U.S. Air Force NCO who spent more than three years researching and…

This is a pair of black and white lithographs. They are matted and ready to frame. The top lithograph measures 6 3/4″ x 4.” It shows the Confederate States of America (CSA) Ironclad C. S. S. Virginia shelling Union frigates on 8 March 1861 at Hampton Roads, VA. On that date the Virginia sank two Union frigates. On the morning of 9 March 1862, the Virginia, more commonly known as the Merrimack (her Union name before she was scuttled and raised by the CSA to be rebuilt as an ironclad) met the U. S. S. Monitor in the first battle of iron ships. This revolutionized the world’s navies. The two vessels fought to a draw. Nevertheless, sailing vessels were soon replaced by iron vessels. The lower lithograph, which measures 11 1/4″ x 6 1/4,” shows Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, SC in 1863. Fort Sumter was shelled in April 1861 by CSA forces and the Union garrison surrendered. This lithograph shows the Fort occupied by CSA troops and being shelled by a Union Naval Fleet.

During the 20th Century when motion pictures were released, interesting items were often shipped to theaters to help promote the movies. The most basic was a “Theater Card.” It had information on the actors, the studio, etc. Today we are offering a very interesting item from the motion picture “Zeppelin.” The movie was released in 1971 by Warner Brothers. The stars were Michael York and Elke Sommer. The item is an inflatable zeppelin that measures 37 1/2″ in length and 21 1/2″ in height. It is silver in color.” Zeppelin is coming from Warner Bros” is printed on both sides. The zeppelin is reasonably detailed. String attachments are at the top where it could have been hung for display. It has a valve where one can blow it up.
