AUSTRIA – FRAME – HAND CARVED WOOD – HAPSBURG EAGLE
SKU: 26-62 A
Massive, truly magnificent, artistically hand carved wooden Hapsburg Eagle. It has been years since we have offered a sophisticated example of German Imperial Period woodcarving. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest we have ever offered. During the Imperial Period, most of Europe’s finest hand woodcarving came from Germany and Austria. [The tradition is still practiced today primarily in Southern Germany (the Black Forest and Bavaria) and Northern Austria (the Tyrol)]. I cannot say with certainty whether our example originated in Austria or Germany, although it was done to commemorate Austria’s Hapsburg Empire. I date this fine example from 1875 up through 1918, when the Great War’s end resulted in the demise of Germany and Austria’s empires….$2,495.00$2,150.00In stock

A yellow-embroidered flower and its leafy stem grace the mat’s center. Embroidered in light-blue thread above and to the left are the words “Andenken Belgien (Souvenir of Belgium).” Below the flower to the right are the dates 1914-1918. BRAUNSCHWEIG – GOBLET – INFANTERIE-REGIMENT NR 92 – PENINSULA BANDEAU – 9 CM TALL
SKU: 18-508 XKA
BRAUNSCHWEIG – GOBLET – INFANTERIE-REGIMENT NR 92 – PENINSULA BANDEAU – 9 CM TALL. The Duchy of Braunschweig’s Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 is one of the Imperial German Army’s most legendary units. Its soldiers displayed Totenköpfe (Deaths-Heads) on their headdresses from the Napoleonic times forward. [They also sported menacing black uniforms well into the 1880’s, before transitioning to dunkel-blau (dark-blue) then WW I’s Feldgrau (field-grey) uniforms]. Naturally, members of this regiment wanted to display the Totenköpfe on their personal items as well, such as this marvelous goblet. This Braunschweig Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 Goblet stands 3.5” (9 cm) tall which is much larger than the small Totenkopf-decorated schnapps cups we have offered in the past. Its high-relief Totenkopf is quite bold. Directly below the Totenkopf’s crossed bones is a bandeau for “Peninsula.” The latter was the Napoleonic Wars’ campaign commanded by Great Britain’s Lord Wellington, in which IR 92 and other German regiments won great glory. The Braunschweig Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 Goblet measures 2.25” in diameter at the rim and 1.5” in diameter at its base. Its bottom features its manufacturer’s hallmark, in addition to a hallmark for its .935 Silver content. This is a VERY high-quality, silver-hallmarked vessel from an important regiment.$1,295.00$1,100.75In stock

BRAUNSCHWEIG – GOBLET – INFANTERIE-REGIMENT NR 92 OR HUSAREN-REGIMENT 17 – 10CM TALL. The Duchy of Braunschweig’s Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 and Husaren-Regiment 17 were two of the Imperial German Army’s most legendary units. Their soldiers displayed Totenköpfe (Deaths-Heads) on their headdresses from the Napoleonic times forward. [They also sported menacing black uniforms well into the 1880’s, before transitioning to dunkel-blau (dark-blue) then WW I’s Feldgrau (field-grey) uniforms]. Naturally, members of both regiments wanted to display the Totenköpfe on their personal items as well, such as this marvelous goblet. Since the goblet does not sport a bandeau, it could belong to either Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 or Husaren-Regiment 17. This Braunschweig Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 or Husaren-Regiment 17 Goblet stands 4” (10 cm) tall, which is much larger than the small Totenkopf-decorated schnapps cups we have offered in the past. Its high-relief Totenkopf is quite bold. It does NOT display a battle campaign bandeau. It measures 3” in diameter at its rim and 1.75” in diameter at its base. Its bottom features a hallmark for “Wilkens,” a very fine German manufacturer. I believe that this cup is made of “German Silver” (nickel). In stock

BRAUNSCHWEIG – SALT POT – OFFICER
SKU: 34-26$695.00
The dinner tables at officers’ messes were quite formal and elaborate, depending on the regiment. The officers’ messes at Husaren-Regiment Nr 17 and Infantrie-Regiment Nr 92 were among the most elaborate of all of the German Army regiments. Today we are offering an officer’s salt pot from one of these two regiments. Small salt pots were used in place of salt shakers during the Imperial Period, especially in an officer’s mess. Sometimes they had a small spoon that allowed the user to sprinkle salt onto his food. Other times no spoon was used, and a simple “pinch” of salt sufficed. This pot measures 1 ½” in diameter and stands 1″ tall. As I look at it, the pot reminds me of a miniature kettle drum. It has engraving on its three sides, which reveals a great deal about this interesting dining accouterment. On one side is the name Oberleutnant von Schierstaedt. On a second side is the Wilhelm of Braunschweig’s Cypher. The third side bears the date 1 November 1901. Underneath, on the pot’s bottom, is hallmarking for .800 silver and for Jurgens, the Herzog (Duke) of Braunschweig’s house jeweler. This piece has a lot of personality and a fabulous patina. In stock

Braunschweig, referred to as Brunswick by the English, was a small Duchy that served as an important trade center throughout much of Germany’s earlier history. Braunschweig’s Herzog Friedrich Wilhelm (1771-1815), whose father was a Prussian Generalfeldmarschall, participated in the 1806 Battle of Jena, which was a major defeat of Prussia by Napoleon Bonaparte. Friedrich Wilhelm’s father was killed in the battle, and Braunschweig was taken over by France. Friedrich Wilhelm then fled to England in order to begin raising troops. After he had raised about 2,200 men, Friedrich Wilhelm returned to fight against Napoleon in 1809 with England’s Duke of Wellington……In stock

GERMANY – CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT – PRE WWI – BALL-SHAPED

Christmas was a very special time of year for Imperial Germans (it still is). Today we are offering a significant Imperial German Christmas tree ornament. It is made of glass and is ball-shaped. As a matter of fact, it is just about the size of a golf ball (although I doubt that is what the ornament is supposed to represent)! The ornament measures 6 1/8″ in diameter. The ball is silver, with a dimpled exterior. Painted around the entire ornament are three red, white, and black stripes, representing Germany’s national colors. At the top is a typical ornament’s attachment through which a hook is placed to hang it on a Christmas tree. This marvelous ornament is very close to one-hundred-years-old. SKU: 34-63$95.00
This is an interesting crocheted piece celebrating the 500th anniversary of some event in Germany (1415-1915). I am not sure exactly what event it commemorates. It is designed to protect one’s hand when removing a hot dish from the oven, then serve as a hot pad to protect the table surface from the hot dish while it is being served. The piece measures 15 3/4″ x 9″ when opened up completely. A Hohenzollern Eagle is beautifully embroidered in the center of the outside flap, with the dates 1415 in the upper left corner and 1915 in the lower right. Lace decorates three sides of the flap. Underneath is the pocket into which one’s hand is placed to grasp the hot dish. It is both a practical and beautiful item, in excellent shape for its age. The embroidery is exquisite. In stock

GERMANY – DEMITASSE (COFFEE CUP) AND SAUCER – KRIEGSFLAGGE
SKU: 18-509$125.00
GERMANY – DEMITASSE (COFFEE CUP) AND SAUCER – KRIEGSFLAGGE. This is an absolutely marvelous Imperial German demitasse (small cup for serving strong black coffee after dinner) might hold three-to-four ounces of liquid. It is accompanied by its matching saucer. The white porcelain cup has a scalloped rim and sports a design of two royal-blue, laurel leaf sprigs that frame a lovely Kriegsflagge (also royal-blue) between them. A royal-blue line encircles the inside of the cup about ⅛” below the rim. The demitasse’s delicate handle exhibits a feather-like design at the three spots it attaches to the cup’s surface. All three are edged with the same contrasting royal-blue paint. The cup’s bottom features a manufacturer’s hallmark of two crossed, royal-blue swords, which appears to be for Meissen. The saucer presents scalloped edges and a blue line that encircles its interior ⅛” below the rim, just like the cup. Four royal-blue pairs of laurel leaf sprigs arranged around the saucer just below the blue line. The saucer’s bottom also features the two crossed, royal-blue swords in its center, as well as a blue “71″ at the 12 o’clock position. FOR ALL GERMAN HOUSEWARES – CLICK HEREIn stock

GERMANY – INK WELL – BIEDERMAIER PERIOD

This is a unique ink well from the Biedermaier period, which was from approximately 1815-1858. The inkwell begins with a burled style of wood base. Mounted on the wood base are small metal “buttons.” Attached to the base is a metal, saucer-like arrangement where spilled ink, pen nibs, paper clips, etc. might be placed. A small glass bottle for the ink is then attached to this area. The stopper for the ink bottle is of the same design as the base, with the inclusion of a floral motif. All is of very fine quality and condition. For you folks who enjoy using a fountain pen (as I do), this would be a great desk piece that could be filled with the ink of your choice. GERMANY – PATRIOTIC SERVING TRAY

This tray is most interesting. Its central motif shows Germany oldest general (Generalfeldmarschall, actually) of WW I, Graf von Haesler. This man, who was a cavalrymen, came from the Uhlans. He served Germany in four wars, in 1864, 1866, 1870, and in WW I. This serving tray has a wooden frame and wooden handles with brass trim. It measures 12 ½” x 7 7/8.” In the center under glass is a very colorful patriotic rendition of von Haesler with flags, banners, etc. Von Haesler is dressed in the feldgrau uniform of a Generalfeldmarschall. He is superimposed over an Iron Cross with the date 1914. In looking at this, I have come to the conclusion that this was at one time the lid of a cigar box. It was probably used to house fine Havana cigars! Today it can serve as a wonderful serving tray to hold your drinks when served at cocktail hour, or for any other purpose. Or, it would look neat on its own!In stock

GERMANY – PATRIOTIC TABLE/DRESSER SCARF – WESTERN FRONT MAP – 1914

PATRIOTIC TABLE/DRESSER SCARF – WESTERN FRONT MAP – 1914. This is a most unusual item. I would describe it as a table or dresser scarf that measures 22″ x 25 ½,” and takes the form of a multicolored map depicting the Western Front, including Belgium, France, and Western Germany. The legend listed below appears in the map’s lower left corner. Karte (Map) vom (of) Deutsch-Französischen (German-French) Kriegschauplatz (Theater of War) 1914 The map is made of thin, gauzy cotton, similar to what was used on many of the period’s military and patriotic flags. The flag features a wide red border on its edge, followed by smaller, red, black and white (Germany’s national colors) half-inch-wide borders surrounding the black and white map in its center. Numerous oak leaves (symbolizing German strength) are laid diagonally across these national color bands. The highly-detailed central map concentrates on the northern part of France, with most of Belgium, as well as the strip of Western Germany that shared its eastern border with France. City names are prominently displayed, as well as depictions of more hilly terrain. The scarf is in very fine condition, overall. With some creativity on the part of its new owner, it would make a fine addition to a WW I display. In stock

GERMANY – PLATE – MILITARY THEMES FROM CHILD’S VIEWPOINT – KPM
SKU: 18-321$395.00
This is an interesting plate, which comes from the noted Prussian porcelain firm, KPM. KPM was located in Berlin and served every Prussian King and Kaiser from Frederick the Great onward. By the time KPM was serving Kaiser Wilhelm II, they were producing large numbers (in terms of place settings) of tableware and in multiple patterns. As if it were not enough that they produced tableware for all the various castles wherein the Kaiser entertained, they also produced tableware for the Kaiser’s ships. Tableware had to be provided for the S.M.S. Deutschland (the ship he sailed on when he was with the fleet) and the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern (his primary yacht). This gives you just a hint of the quantity, not to mention the quality of the items that KPM produced. They did other work aside from the royal family (this included the Kaiserin, the Kaiser’s children, and other Princes of the House of Hohenzollern). The plate measures 7 3/4” in diameter. It is multicolored and has an angel as the central motif. Around the angel are items that appeal to children, although most are of a military nature. One sees a teddy bear wearing a busby. An airplane appears, as well as a cannon and a drum. Even a zeppelin shows up. The plate’s obverse is in excellent condition. As we examine the reverse, we see the hallmarking for KPM. Also a chip is present here, which, while unfortunate, does not detract from the overall presentation of the plate. In stock

There is no hallmarking so to identify the specifics of where they plates were manufactured is a mystery other than they come to us from a family that has had them in their possession for nearly 100 years. These plate cans be sold separate or as a set. Please call us for individual pricing. FOR MORE HOUSEWARES – CLICK HEREIn stock

GERMANY – PURSE – LADIES SMALL PATRIOTIC CHANGE PURSE
SKU: 34-89$95.00
Here is an interesting ladies’ accessory that was purchased at a well known Berlin military uniform shop. This small change purse joins the many different patriotic items available for soldiers’ wives, sweethearts, mothers, and sisters. It measures 4 ½” x 5″ and is cut from the same dark-blue wool material used for many German military uniforms. The firm’s label is revealed when its front flap is unsnapped. The label is attached to the flap’s black silk inner lining and reads “Wilhelm Braun/Berlin S.W. 61/Yorkstr. 16.” The flap’s dark-blue outer cover features the silver bullion used to decorate an NCO’s tunic sleeves. The bullion runs horizontally across the flap’s base and is surmounted by a red, then a yellow, miniature shoulder strap. The straps could represent any one of a number of Prussian Army Garde-Regiments. [For example, the red shoulder strap was used by, but not limited to, such units as the Kaiser Franz Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr 2, the Garde-Jäger-Bataillon, the Garde-Schützen-Bataillon, the 2. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment, or the Garde-Pionier- Bataillon. By the same token, the yellow shoulder strap was used by, but not limited to, such units as the Garde-Fusilier-Regiment, the 2. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß, or the 3. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment]. The purse’s interior could secure such small items as paper money and change, personal papers, etc. It sports a set of short yellow cords at its top by which a lady could suspend it from her wrist. It is a very handy little item that could still be used by some special lady in…In stock

GERMANY – SERVING TRAY – SILVERED WITH MIRRORED BASE
SKU: 18-204$125.00
Life in Imperial Germany was much more formal than ours. Entertaining was more elaborate. This is obvious from the glassware, tableware, etc. used at the time. {For further examples of the ornate and delightful pieces available, visit our PATRIOTIC TABLEWARE MERCHANDISE PAGE. This silvered tray measures 14″ in diameter and is quite large. It rests on three small balled “feet.” The edges have an intricate cutout design that is quite attractive. The center of the serving tray is mirrored and silvered. This makes for an interesting effect. However from age and use the mirror is flaking in places. Its coating is no longer complete. The tray is still sturdy. If one put some silver polish on this, it could look amazing. Or, one can enjoy its patina as is.In stock

GERMANY – TABLECLOTH – COMMEMORATING GENERALFELDMARSCHALL PAUL von HINDENBURG’S BATTLE OF TANNENBERG VICTORY
SKU: 34-85$195.00
The Battle of Tannenberg was one of Germany’s most important WW I victories. German forces on the Eastern front were commanded by then-Generaloberst Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934). The battle took place 23-30 August 1914, between one German army and two Russian armies during WW I’sfirst month. The victory made von Hindenburg a hero in Germany, and he was showered with honors throughout the war. He ultimately became the Chief of the General Staff (Chef des Generalstabs) in 1916, and held that position until WW I’s end. Today we are offering a patriotic tablecloth that commemorates the German victory at the Battle of Tannenberg. The tablecloth measures 50″ x 57 ½.” The predominant color is light-blue on a white background. Each corner sports a large portrait of von Hindenburg in uniform wearing a Pour le Mérite. The tablecloth features many designs that make enchanting enhancements to the overall display. In the center is a church, and below it the legend “Das Kirchlein zu Tannenberg” (the Tannenberg Chapel). The tablecloth is in excellent condition. It makes for a wonderful addition to any table, even if the table is larger than the tablecloth itself. In stock

GERMANY – WALL PLAQUE – “VERDUN 1916”
SKU: 12-796$150.00
This is a very touching and poignant reminder of the Great War. It is a wooden wall plaque bearing the legend “Verdun 1916.” The two WW I battles that most remind us of its ultimate futility are Verdun and the Somme. Many other battles were equally gruesome and heartbreaking, but these two battles’ geographic and chronological proximity geometrically increases their significance. Nearly five million men were committed as combatants in the two battles, which resulted in nearly two million causalities. The Battle of Verdun lasted from 21 February to 18 December 1916. The Battle of the Somme lasted from 1 July to 18 November 1916. The primary German commander at Verdun was Prussia’s Kronprinz Wilhelm, while Kronprinz Rupprecht of Bavaria was in command at the Somme. Both battles were bloodbaths, yet the war lasted another long two years after they had been fought. Our offering is a wooden wall plaque that measures 7 ¾” x 7 ¾.” Carved into the plaque’s bottom in German Fraktur script is “Verdun 1916.” Mounted directly above that is a complete artillery driving band that measures 4 ¾” in diameter. A hanger is on the reverse. In stock

IMPERIAL GERMANY – TABLE-SALVER/WALL PLAQUE – FEATURING S.M.S. ÄGIR – PEWTER
SKU: 18-544$250.00
This round, decorative, pewter salver/wall plague measures approximately 19 ¾” wide in circumference, and sports a gently scalloped rim that varies in width from 2 ¼” to 2 ½.” Its decoratively embossed center measures approximately 14 ¾” across, and descends about half an inch lower than the rim. The salver/wall plaque depicts the S.M.S. Ägir, the second and final member of the Imperial German Navy’s Odin Klasse of Küstenpanzerschiffe (coastal defense ships), whose only other sister ship was the Odin. [Ägir was the Norse sea-god, a figure resembling the Old Man of the Sea]. The ship was armed with a main battery of three 24-centimeter (9.4 inch) guns. She served in the German fleet throughout the 1890s and was rebuilt from 1901 into 1903. The S.M.S. Ägir served in the VI Battle Squadron after World War I’s August 1914 outbreak, although it saw no action. The Ägir was demobilized in 1915, then employed as a tender. After the war, she was rebuilt as a merchant ship and served in this capacity until December 1929, when she was wrecked on Sweden’s Gotland Island….In stock

PRUSSIA – BOWL- KAISER WILHELM II – SOUP BOWL – S.M.Y. HOHENZOLLERN
SKU: 20-343$2,295.00
The S.M.Y. (Seiner Majestät Yacht) Hohenzollern was Kaiser Wilhelm II’s royal yacht. An earlier royal yacht by the same name was launched in 1878 and used by the House of Hohenzollern heads until 1892. It was then renamed the Kaiser Adler and later scrapped in 1912. The second, and most famous, S.M.Y. Hohenzollern was placed in service in 1894. It was used extensively by Kaiser Wilhelm II until just shortly before WW I began, when it was retired. [A bigger and even more opulent S.M.Y. Hohenzollern actually was launched in 1914, but it remained incomplete due to the war]. Wilhelm II spent the equivalent of five years (from 1894 through the first part of 1914) aboard the second Hohenzollern, primarily sailing around the Baltic, North, and Mediterranean Seas. Every summer, with the exception of 1906, Wilhelm’s favorite destination was Norway. The Hohenzollern, accompanied by at least one German cruiser anchored in a fjord, where the Kaiser exercised daily in the morning, sailed, and enjoyed visits ashore. He and his guests dined luxuriously from a table service specifically designed for use aboard the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern. The Kaiser maintained many different place settings at his various castles and estates. He even had a set designed for his use aboard the Kaiserliche Marine’s various flagships, as well as aboard his racing sloop. [Saying the Kaiser knew how to live it up in style is a gross understatement]. One tableware pattern that many Imperial German collectors prefer is that from the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern’s table…In stock

PRUSSIA – COFFEE/TEA CREAMER – PERSONAL TABLE SERVICE – PRINZ EITEL FRIEDRICH
SKU: 18-531$885.00
The creamer stands 3 3/4″ tall, measures 2 ½” in diameter at the rim, and 2 1/8″ in diameter at the base. A delicate gold trim band encircles the rim. Its handle features gold designs against the white porcelain. A floral motif extends from the handle’s top and bottom. On the cup’s side is Eitel Friedrich’s royal cypher in gold. Over the cypher we see a multicolored Hohenzollern Crown. The cup’s bottom displays the KPM hallmark and 1924, the year the creamer was manufactured, as well as an Iron Cross. It is interesting to see a royal’s personal item such as this AFTER the empire’s fall. (My theory is it was a replacement for a broken piece). The creamer’s condition is excellent. It is a truly wonderful example of a Prussian prince’s tableware….In stock

PRUSSIA – DINNER PLATE – KAISER WILHELM II’s PERSONAL DINNER SERVICE ABOARD NAVAL VESSELS
SKU: 20-348$1,495.00
DINNER PLATE – KAISER WILHELM II’s PERSONAL DINNER SERVICE ABOARD NAVAL VESSELS. This is an interesting, very rare, dinner plate that Kaiser Wilhelm II used when he sailed with the German fleet. The plate is interesting because it is NOT named for the Kaiser’s flagships, the battleship S.M.S. Kaiser Wilhelm II or, later, the S.M.S. Deutschland. He also had table service for his royal yacht, the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern and his racing sloop, the S.M.Y. Iduna. Kaiser Wilhelm II was very intrigued by his navy and his role within it. Plans for the Imperial German Navy’s expansion were constantly brewing at the Navy Ministry between the Kaiser and his alter-ego, Admiral von Tirpitz. As the German Empire’s Kaiser, Wilhelm was expected to live well, but he went FAR beyond that. Wilhelm lived in virtually the same style on his royal yacht, the S. M. Y. Hohenzollern, as he did at any of his palaces on land, INCLUDING the specially-designed dishware. The S. M. Y. Hohenzollern carried special plates, saucers, etc., exclusively for use on that vessel. So, a fifth set of tableware was created for his visits to other ships in the fleet so that he would have the same level of luxury aboard the other ships that he chanced to visit. For example, cruisers were dispatched to attend him on his regular visits to Norway’s fjords. Thus, if he entertained officers aboard their ship instead of the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern, he had the “correct” tableware to fete them. The plate measures…In stock

PRUSSIA / NASSAU – STEIN – FELD-ARTILLERIE-REGIMENT Nr 27
SKU: 18-437 XLO
PRUSSIA / NASSAU – STEIN – FELD-ARTILLERIE-REGIMENT Nr 27 It comes from a collector of veterans’ steins who recently passed away. His widow has entrusted us with finding a new home for several of his prized steins. The gentleman had an amazing eye for good quality and only acquired the “best of the best” steins. We have four of his steins in this update and hope to share more with you in the future. The very large and elaborate veteran’s stein was for a soldier who served in 1. Nassauisches Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr 27 – Batterie Nr 4. The regiment was founded in 1833 and garrisoned at Mainz-Wiesbaden. It was assigned to the XVIII. Armeekorps. Nassau was a Duchy that was founded in 1806. It remained an independent state until 1866, when it fought on the losing side of the Austro-Prussian War and was annexed by Prussia as were the Kingdom of Hannover and the Duchy of Braunschweig. When Nassau was folded into Prussia, she had two Infanterie Regiments and one Artillerie Regiment. These all became Prussian regiments. In 1897, Kaiser Wilhelm granted the two Nassau Infanterie Regiments their Battle of Waterloo bandeaux, (the battle honors worn on the pickelhauben’s wappen of their from their participation at the 1815 battle). As the Artillerie Regiment was not formed until 1833, their kugelhelme wappens remained unadorned. The porcelain stein’s overall height is 12.” A soldier standing beside a cannon adorns the pewter lid. Its thumb device features a rampant crowned lion. An inscription…$850.00$722.50In stock
