This is a color postcard of Prinzregent Luitpold of Bavaria. Luitpold was the effective King of Bavaria from 1886, when Ludwig II was removed as King due to his insanity (or so the story goes). His brother Otto was also judged too insane to become an acting king. Although Otto retained the title as Bavaria’s King, it was Luitpold who headed the royal family until his death in 1911. He is seen here in uniform. The postcard was mailed in Bavaria in 1911.

Then he was posted to Infanterie-Regiment Nr 13, first as a Bataillon Commander, and then as the Regimental Commander. From this, he was promoted to a Brigade, and later, a Division Commander. In 1900, he was promoted to General der Kavallerie (equal to a U.S. Lieutenant General) of the Austrian XIV. ArmeeKorps. (Some say that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was increasingly jealous of him). Eugen retired from the army in 1911, at the age of forty-eight. After Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in 1914 and WW I’s ensuing outbreak, Eugen returned to command the 5. Armee. He was promoted to Generaloberst in May 1915, and commanded all Austrian troops from the Swiss border to the Adriatic. In March 1916, he was officially placed in charge of an Armeegruppe known as Herresgruppen-Kommando Erzherzog Eugen. He assumed command of the 3. Armee and 11. Armee in the Spring of 1916. He was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall in November 1916. [Please remember that a generalfeldmarschall’s rank was not given out lightly or in any great numbers in either the German or the Austrian Army]. POSTCARD – BAVARIAN GENERALFELDMARSCHALL PRINZ LEOPOLD

    SKU: 43-358

    $15.00

During WW I, three German royals were truly able commanders. They worked their way to their positions not so much by their royal births, but by their performances. Those three men were Kronprinz Rupprecht of Bavaria, Herzog Albrecht of Württemberg, and Prinz Leopold of Bavaria. These men achieved the rank of generalfeldmarschall and commanded vast troop numbers in Armeegruppen or Herresgruppen. (Army Groups were assemblages of multiple armies (generally three or more) that reported to these men. They were a huge responsibility. [Remember, Kronprinz Wilhelm was only given command of ONE army during the war(!)]. These three men were excellent commanders. Along with von Mackensen and von Hindenburg, they were among WW I Germany’s best. The postcard we are offering today is of Generalfeldmarschall Prinz Leopold (1846-1930). We do not hear a great deal about him as he spent the war’s bulk fighting on the Eastern Front. It is interesting to note that during the 1870/71 Franco-Prussian War Leopold was awarded the 1870 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class (first as a young hauptmann, then a major). He progressed through the Bavarian Army and was promoted to generalfeldmarschall in 1905. He retired in 1913, but was brought back to active service at the age of sixty-eight with WW I’s onset. This made him one of the German Army’s older senior commanders. In 1915 he was given command of the IX. Armee, replacing von Mackensen. Next, he was promoted to lead Herresgruppe Prinz Leopold, which consisted of German and Austrian troops…

This postcard shows a rather young Crown Prince Wilhelm (1882-1951), with his wife Crown Princess Cecilie (1886-1954) seated on some steps. The young Crown Prince is uncharacteristically dressed in a suit. She is identified as the Duchess (Herzogin) from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The caption also mentions they are at Gelbensande. It was the location of the Jagdschloss Gelbensande (Gelbensande Hunting Castle), which had been erected between 1880 and 1885 as a summer residence for Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III (her father). Young Wilhelm proposed to the Duchess at the Jagdschloss, so it is quite probable this photo was taken shortly after his proposal. This was not mailed.

This postcard shows Crown Prince Wilhelm (1882-1951) and his wife, Crown Princess Cecilie (1886-1954). They are seated in a study, with a stern Hussar officer looking on from a photograph on the desk. (It may be of Cecilie’s uncle, Duke John Albert of Mecklenburg, who served as regent for Cecilie’s brother after their father’s death in 1897). Since the couple are wearing the same outfits as Postcard 45-43, the photo was probably taken at the Jagdschloss Gelbensande, where they became engaged. (It is dated 1904 on the back. They were married in June 1905). The postcard was not mailed.

This postcard shows Erzherzog Leopold Ferdinand of Austria in uniform. He was a cousin of Austria’s royal family, Archduke Ferdinand IV of Tuscany’s son, and quite the black sheep. Leopold fell in love with a prostitute and suffered from alcoholism. His parents had him dried-out, then tried to bribe him to abandon his mistress. He left the Imperial House and fled to Switzerland, where he married the prostitute, Wilhelmina Adamovich, whom he later divorced. (He married two more times). He petitioned Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to renounce his rank as an archduke, which was granted in 1902. He took the name Leopold Wölfling, after a peak in the Ore Mountains. He was forbidden from entering Austrian lands and became a Swiss citizen. He was given money from the state, as well as an income from his parents. After World War I, Wölfling’s allowance from his family stopped. He had many adventures before returning to Austria and opening a delicatessen store in Vienna where he sold salami and olive oil. He eventually wrote a book called From Archduke to Grocer. He died in 1935.

He commanded forces at many of the battles on the Western Front including Ardennes, Marne, Yser, etc. He was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in August 1915, and was promoted from Generaloberst to Generalfeldmarschall in August 1916. He commanded Armee-Gruppe Albrecht with great distinction. He was third-in-line for Württemberg’s throne. His father died in 1917. Albrecht was the heir apparent after König Wilhelm II of Württemberg, who was his cousin. Wilhelm II died in 1921, and Albrecht became the head of Württemberg’s royal house. This is an early-war photograph before his award of the PLM and his promotion to Generalfeldmarschall.

Unlike many royals who served as à la Suite officers, he was a legitimate military commander. He commanded Bavaria’s 6. Armee until 1916, when he was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall. He commanded Armee-Gruppe Rupprecht with great distinction. Rupprecht was opposed to National Socialism and fled to Italy in 1939. In this pose Albrecht is seen wearing a Generaloberst’s (à la Suite) uniform from Leib-Küraßier-Regiment Großer Kurfürst (Schlesisches) Nr 1. It was the oldest of the Prussian Küraßier-Regiments. It had a full array of orders and decorations, including breast stars and neck orders.
