His portrait is small and contained within a laurel leaf wreath. The portrait is inserted within a painting by Professor Willy Stöwer, one of Germany’s most famous naval painters at the time. The painting features the fleet’s flagship, the S.M.S. Deutschland, at Kiel. Please note: below Prinz Heinrich’s portrait is his flag denoting he is an admiral, AND a flag proclaiming him a House of Hohenzollern prince. The latter flag was flown on any vessel on which a prince traveled. [We currently are offering such a flag on our FLAG MERCHANDISE PAGE, ROYALTY MERCHANDISE PAGE, and NAVY MERCHANDISE PAGE. Click on any of these three page titles to see it]. Finally, the postcard displays the reproduction signatures of Prinz Heinrich and two other personages. It was not mailed.

This postcard shows Erzherzog Leopold Ferdinand of Austria in uniform. He was a cousin of Austria’s royal family, Archduke Ferdinand IV of Tuscany’s son, and quite the black sheep. Leopold fell in love with a prostitute and suffered from alcoholism. His parents had him dried-out, then tried to bribe him to abandon his mistress. He left the Imperial House and fled to Switzerland, where he married the prostitute, Wilhelmina Adamovich, whom he later divorced. (He married two more times). He petitioned Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to renounce his rank as an archduke, which was granted in 1902. He took the name Leopold Wölfling, after a peak in the Ore Mountains. He was forbidden from entering Austrian lands and became a Swiss citizen. He was given money from the state, as well as an income from his parents. After World War I, Wölfling’s allowance from his family stopped. He had many adventures before returning to Austria and opening a delicatessen store in Vienna where he sold salami and olive oil. He eventually wrote a book called From Archduke to Grocer. He died in 1935.

This is a photo postcard depicting Generalfeldmarschall Herzog Albrecht von Württemberg (1865-1939). Herzog Albrecht was a very capable military commander. Unlike many royals who served as an à la Suite officer, he was a legitimate military commander. He commanded forces at many of the battles on the Western Front including Ardennes, Marne, Yser, etc. He was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in August 1915, and was promoted from Generaloberst to Generalfeldmarschall in August 1916. He commanded Armee-Gruppe Albrecht with great distinction. He was third-in-line for Württemberg’s throne. His father died in 1917. Albrecht was the heir apparent after König Wilhelm II of Württemberg, who was his cousin. Wilhelm II died in 1921, and Albrecht became the head of Württemberg’s royal house. This is an early-war photograph before his award of the PLM and his promotion to Generalfeldmarschall.

    SKU: 38-704

This is a postcard that depicts Kronprinz Rupprecht of Bavaria (1869-1955). Rupprecht was König Ludwig III of Bavaria’s oldest son. Kronprinz Rupprecht was a very capable military commander. Unlike many royals who served as à la Suite officers, he was a legitimate military commander. He commanded Bavaria’s 6. Armee until 1916, when he was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall. He commanded Armee-Gruppe Rupprecht with great distinction. Rupprecht was opposed to National Socialism and fled to Italy in 1939. In this pose Albrecht is seen wearing a Generaloberst’s (à la Suite) uniform from Leib-Küraßier-Regiment Großer Kurfürst (Schlesisches) Nr 1. It was the oldest of the Prussian Küraßier-Regiments. It had a full array of orders and decorations, including breast stars and neck orders.

This is a very fine postcard that shows the Crown Prince in the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1’s uniform. He was photographed in this regiment’s uniform more often than any other with which he was involved. Here, he is wearing the regiment’s classic attila. Around his neck he wears the House of Hohenzollern’s Collar. The regiment’s schirmütze is cocked at a jaunty angle on his head. A Totenkopf appears between the state and reich’s kokarden on the schirmütze’s front, which was emblematic of the regiment and her sister unit, 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 2.

She bore him four sons and two daughters. She, along with her mother-in-law the Kaiserin, was one of Germany’s most-popular female royals, much like a present-day rock star. POSTCARD – NAVY MEMORIAL – KIEL

    SKU: 38-1310

    $15.00

The Marine Ehrenmal Laboe near Kiel is one of the most outstanding navy memorials in the world. It was first opened for and commemorated the German seamen who died for their country in WW I. In the 1950’s, the memorial was intended as a memorial for ALL seamen. This postcard shows the main portion of the building. The tower is some 72 Meters tall. It has an underground memorial (you really feel like you are under the water. I enjoy sitting here in silence, thinking of all the sailors who have died for their countries). The memorial complex has two other interesting parts. First is the U-995, which is one of only two known, intact WW II U-Boats in existence (the other, the U-505, resides in Chicago, USA). You can tour the U-995 from stem to stern. The other area is the U-Boat memorial. It lists each U-Boat that was lost during WW I and WW II. Under every boat’s name, each man who perished is listed. This postcard showing the central tower comes from the 1930’s, shortly after the memorial first opened.

    SKU: 38-946

Otto von Bismarck (1813-1898) is one of German history’s leading political figures. He became Germany’s first Chancellor in 1871, after Prussia’s King Wilhelm I was crowned Germany’s first Kaiser. Bismarck was greatly involved in Germany’s unification, as She worked her way through the unification wars of 1864 and 1866, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, which was the final step. He was a master of foreign policy. He was also at the forefront of social welfare changes made in Germany. He was retired from his post in 1890 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. This followed Wilhelm’s 1888 assumption of the throne, after the deaths of his grandfather, Wilhelm I, and his father, Friedrich III. Wilhelm II and von Bismarck had monumental differences regarding the future role of Germany’s foreign policy. A key difference was Wilhelm II’s desire to expand Germany’s overseas colonies. Bismarck felt strongly that this would bring Germany into conflict with other European powers, especially Great Britain. The last five years of von Bismarck’s life were relatively quiet. This pose shows him in retirement at some point after 1890.

  • POSTCARD - PAINTING - LAST MAN - Imperial German Military Antiques Sale

POSTCARD – PAINTING – LAST MAN

    SKU: 38-1086

    $15.00

The painting of “The Last Man” (Der Leßte Mann) was very popular in Germany during WW I. It was painted by Professor Hans Bohrdt. It shows a defiant German sailor thrusting a kriegsflagge in the air as he stands on what appears to be the deck of a German ship. Several ships in the background are steaming towards the man. The painting was done to commemorate the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914, wherein the German squadron commanded by Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee (1861-1914) was destroyed by an English squadron. Only one of von Spee’s ships escaped the action. The admiral and two of his sons perished in the battle. Ironically, twenty-five years later in December 1939, the pocket battleship Graf Spee was scuttled in the river Plate between Argentina and Uruguay. This was after fighting with another British squadron, and being forced to leave the waters due to the laws of international neutrality. The spirit of this painting was a rallying point for the German Navy and the people of Germany, since this “Last Man” fights on to the end. This postcard depicts a black and white version of “The Last Man,” and a poem that salutes his bravery and spirit. This postcard was mailed in 1915.
