  • GERMANY - FRACK BAR - TWO PLACE - Imperial German Military Antiques Sale

GERMANY – FRACK BAR – TWO PLACE

    SKU: 02-399

    $150.00

This is a two-place Frack Bar. A Frack Bar differs from a military medal bar in that it was worn on a civilian suit and was angled rather than horizontal. Frack Bars are much rarer than conventional military medal bars. Its medals are listed below from left to right. 1). War Service Medal. This decoration was given for service during WWI. For the most part it was given to civilians on the home front for service to the Reich. On the obverse it says “Für Kriegs Hilfsdienst.” On the reverse we see Kaiser Wilhelm II’s royal cypher. 2). Hindenburg Cross for Non Combatants. When Adolf Hitler authorized the Hindenburg Cross in 1934 after Reichspräsident (and former Generalfeldmarschall) Paul von Hindenburg’s death, it came in three types: Combatants, Non Combatants (offered here), and Next-of-Kin (a.k.a. the “Widow’s Cross”). Our Non Combatants Cross does not have the swords extending through its center as does the Combatants. The two medals’ ribbons are in fine condition. The Frack Bar’s reverse sports a white backing, with a fine pin for securing it to a garment. Minor moth nipping traces appear on the white backing.

GERMANY – MEDAL BAR – ONE PLACE – HINDENBURG CROSS FOR NON COMBATANTS

    SKU: 02-413

    $50.00

After President and former Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg’s 1934 death, Germany created a three-decoration series christened the “Hindenburg Cross.” The series was authorized for all German Great War veterans, as well as their fallen comrades’ family members. Some awards were also arranged for certain of Germany’s WW I allies. Today we are offering a non combatant veteran’s one-place medal bar (i.e., for service in a support role rather than front-line combat). A Non Combatant’s Hindenburg Cross lacks the crossed swords sported by its front-line companion. Other than that the decorations are identical in appearance. The decoration is mounted on a red, black, and white ribbon. The silk ribbon is in excellent condition, although it does show a minor touch of soiling. The medal bar’s reverse is covered with a blue felt backing, with a pin and catch to secure it to a garment. It is a fine example, in top condition.

GERMANY – MEDAL BAR – ONE PLACE – KAISER WILHELM I CENTENNIAL

    SKU: 02-388

    $55.00

This is a one-place Kaiser Wilhelm I Centennial medal bar. Along with Frederick the Great and Friedrich Wilhelm III, Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888) was a highly successful Prussian King. Prussia grew to be Germany’s dominant state while he was king (with Otto von Bismarck’s direction as his “Iron Chancellor”). Germany eventually was unified under Prussia’s direction, beating Austrian and French armies in short order. He completed his rise to power in 1871 at Versailles, where he was crowned Germany’s Emperor. His reign continued until his death in 1888. He was replaced by his son, former Kronprinz Friedrich III, who lived for only ninety-nine days before dying of throat cancer. Wilhelm I’s grandson, Wilhelm II, then ascended to the throne and ruled until the German Empire’s end in 1918. In 1897, Wilhelm II authorized this centennial medal in honor of his grandfather’s 100th birthday. The bronze decoration is mounted as a one-place medal bar. The medal displays a deep patina. Its ribbon is soiled.

The silk ribbon is also in top condition. Its reverse boasts a sturdy pin. The Iron Cross is slipped onto the medal bar by means of a hook through the jump ring. The backing is a bit unusual. It is made of gray silk rather than the more common felt.

GERMANY – MEDAL BAR – ONE-PLACE – HINDENBURG CROSS WITH SWORDS FOR COMBATANTS

    SKU: 02-443

    $50.00

After Generalfeldmarschall (and Weimar Republic President) Paul von Hindenburg’s death, a series of three decorations was created and authorized for former Great War soldiers and their families. Its three classes were for combatants, non combatants, and families of those soldiers who had died during WW I. The combatant’s cross was bronze-toned and sported crossed swords through its center. The non combatant’s class was also bronze-toned, but lacked swords. The cross for the families of those soldiers who had died during WW I was black, and also lacked swords. Today we are offering a combatant’s version that is displayed as a one-place medal bar. It is set against a red, black, and white parade-wrapped ribbon. The backing on its reverse is made of black felt. A pin is attached for wearing it on a suit coat or a tunic. Its overall condition is very fine.

The enamel center is in excellent condition with no visible cracks. 4th Class Red Eagle’s hallmarks typically appear on the 6 o’clock arm’s edge. This two-place medal bar features a Franco-Prussian War Combatants Medal on the left. It is one of the decoration’s issued examples. The “issued” badges were cast from melted down French cannons, a fact that is engraved on the decoration’s edge (a practice initiated during the 1813-1815 Napoleonic Wars). On the medal bar’s right is a Kaiser Wilhelm I Centennial Medal commemorating his birthday’s 100th anniversary (1787-1897). The two decorations are mounted on correct ribbons that show some soiling.

This is a most unusual medal bar combination of the two medals listed below. *Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class – Prussia. The Red Eagle’s hand-painted center is in flawless condition. The decoration is not hallmarked for a maker. *Crown Order 4th Class with the Fifty Years Long-Service Button-Prussia. The decoration is in first-class condition. Its blue/gold enameled center is flawless. The fifty-year button is mounted on the decoration’s jump ring. The six o’clock arm’s edge reveals a “W” hallmark for one of the House of Hohenzollern’s premiere house jewelers. It is a superb medal bar. Both the medals and their ribbons are crisp and clean. The bar was probably awarded to a civilian, who was most-likely in his seventies when he wore it.

    SKU: 02-322

    $595.00

This is a very interesting two-place medal bar from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It has an unusual decoration combination, one of which requires a special interest and appreciation. From left to right we see these medals: *Long Service Award 2nd Class – Twelve Years Service. Three levels exist for enlisted men and NCO’s Long Service Awards. The 1st Class is for fifteen years and is cross-shaped. The circular 2nd Class is for twelve years and is gilt. The 3rd Class is also circular and silver-toned. Each one has the Saxon Coat-of-Arms on the obverse. On the reverse, each sports its numbers of years in Roman numerals. This medal is indeed gold-toned and displays “XII” on the reverse. The green ribbon is for Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. *Silver Herzog Carl Eduard Service Medal. The silver medal from this Duchy was the 2ndClass award as there was a Gold level of this award. It was awarded both before and during WW I. During WW I it was awarded with swords and/or clasps for the various years of WW I. The magenta and green ribbon again indicates Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It is a fine medal bar. The unusual part about it is the Twelve-Year Long Service award. While not always the case, the twelve-year award usually was for police officers and officials, not for the military. The military award was typically for either nine or fifteen years. It is possible that this award was awarded to a military NCO. It is just another detail for appreciative speculation. Both medals and their…

WÜRTTEMBERG – FRACK BAR – THREE PLACE – HIGHLIGHTED BY KNIGHT’S CROSS 2nd CLASS WITH SWORDS

    SKU: 02-393

    $850.00

This is a three-place “Frack Bar” highlighted by the Kingdom of Württemberg’s Friedrich Order Knight’s Cross 2nd Class with Swords. It is a marvelous three-place “Frack Bar.” [Two characteristics separate a Frack bar from a medal bar. The first visually different feature is that the Frack bar is set at a slight diagonal that generally skews from left-to-right. The second is that the medals are listed in importance from the right-to-left, rather than the medal bar’s more common left-to-right ranking. Also remember that medal and Frack bars typically begin with the Iron Cross 2nd Class]. Going from right-to-left, the decorations on this “Frack Bar” are listed below. * 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class – Prussia. * Knight’s Cross 2nd Class with Swords – Württemberg. The decoration was awarded from 1870 through 1918. It features a white enamel center displaying Friedrich’s gilt-crowned royal cypher. A pair of crossed gilt swords is attached in two places on the medal’s top. A single jump ring is then attached to the swords’ center so that a medal/Frack bar’s ribbon can be attached as needed. * Hindenburg Cross for Combatants with Swords. The award was authorized after Paul von HIndenburg’s 1930’s-era death. It came in three classes: combatant’s, non combatant’s, and next-of-kin. The medals, the ribbons, and the bar itself are in excellent condition.
