The Cross was established 23 October 1914 by Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick. The cross was awarded to all ranks for distinction in war. On 20 March 1918, a first class of the Cross was created in pinback form, with the existing Cross becoming the second class. The cross was awarded on a blue ribbon with yellow stripes for combatants and on a yellow ribbon with blue stripes for non-combatants….

    This is the Combatant version of the medal which is gold. There was also a silver medal for Non Combatants. Both used the same black, white, red, and yellow ribbon. The obverse shows a German Eagle battling the Chinese Dragon. On the reverse we see Kaiser Wilhelm II’s royal cypher. There is also mention of the struggle of the conflict and the dates 1900-1901. The medal is mounted with the correct ribbon. On the reverse of the mount we see a red felt backing and the attaching pin is in place. All exhibit what I call honest age….

    Otto Weddigen was one of the early heroes of WW I. He was also the first officer of the Kaiserliche Marine to be awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite. He and his small U-9 sank three armored British cruisers (H.M.S. Hooue, HMS Aboukir, and H.M.S. Cressy) in little more than an hour on 22 September 1914. For this exploit he was awarded the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class (A high ranking award for a war which had begun six weeks earlier.) The Knights with Swords of the Hohenzollern House Order and the Pour le Mérite would follow shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, Weddigen and new command the U-29 were lost when they were rammed by a British battleship….
