MECKLENBURG SCHWERIN – MILITARY SERVICE CROSS – 2nd CLASS – 1870 – NON COMBATANTS
This is the 1870 Military Service Cross 2nd Class for Non Combatants from the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. It is that state’s Iron Class 2nd Class equivalent. It is similar in size to an Iron Cross 2nd Class and measures 1 ½” x 1 ¾.” The primary difference is that it is gold-toned. A crown sits atop the obverse. In its center is “FF,” which stands for Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s Friedrich Franz III. At the bottom is the year, 1870. This was awarded to army personnel for participation in the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. Like the Prussian Iron Cross 2nd Class, it would have been awarded for a few years after the war as well as during actual wartime. On the reverse we see “Für Auszeichnung im Kriege.” A small piece of replacement ribbon for non combatants is attached to the decoration.
