Karl Emil Schäfer was one of Jasta 11’s best-known pilots under Manfred von Richthofen’s command. During 1917’s “Bloody April,” he shot down no less then fifteen enemy airplanes. He was awarded his PLM and the Knight’s Cross of the Hohenzollern House Order on 26 April 1917. He was also transferred to Jasta 28 as its jastaführer. He was killed in action on 5 June, with a total of thirty confirmed victories. Young Schäfer is shown before his PLM award. All that is visible in his tunic’s buttonholes are the ribbons for two decorations. One is the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. The card is clean on both the front and back.

He and Oswald Boelcke were the first pilots to receive the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916, after they had achieved the score of eight victories. By January 1917, it took sixteen kills. Soon the prescribed number rose to twenty, and finally thirty victories for achievement of the award. Many say that the PLM was nicknamed the “Blue Max” for Immelmann. He died in June of 1916, with fifteen total victories to his credit. In this photograph he is wearing a PLM at his throat. He also wears a five-place medal bar high on his left breast. Below that is his 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class and Prussian Army Pilot Badge. The card is clean and fresh on both sides.

This is a Sanke Card of Max Immelmann. He, along with Oswald Boelcke, was one of the first two German pilots to receive the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916. The legend is that the PLM’s popular name (the Blue Max) was in his honor. He was also known as the “Eagle of Lille.” He received his award after attaining eight confirmed victories. He flew a Fokker Eindecker, which was equipped with an interrupter device that allowed his machine gun to fire between his propeller blades. He died on 15 June 1916 with fifteen victories to his credit.
The postcard shows Immelmann standing against a backdrop. He holds his schirmütze in his hand. His tunic boasts a large medal bar, 1914 Iron Cross, and his Prussian Pilot Badge. Also he wears the coveted Blue Max at his throat. His rank, “Oberleutnant Immelmann,” appears in the card’s right upper corner. Below that is a small white cross, which indicates that he is dead (and means the card was produced after his death). The postcard has not been mailed and is in excellent condition.
