HESSE-DARMSTADT – LOYAL SERVICE – FELDDIENSTZEICHEN -1840
Various variations of the Felddienstzeichen were issued by Hesse-Darmstadt from 1780 through 1866. Changes in the decoration began in 1850.
- Instituted by Grand Duke Ludwig II on 14 June 1840,
- Awarded for participation in a military campaign in the service of Grand Ducal Hesse
- combatant or non-combatant
- Designed by Professor Christian Schnitzspahn (1829-1877) and struck at the Darmstadt Mint from the bronze of old Hessian
This variation is from 1840:
- Circular bronze-toned decoration
- Obverse features Grand Duke Ludwig II’s crowned cypher. Below that is the date, 14 June 1840, within a wreath of laurel and oak
- Reverse Ndisplays “Für Treuen Dienst Im Kriege (For Loyal Service in War).”
- Presents a fine patina
- Sturdy cylinder jump ring suspension
