GERMANY – BAYONET – PRE WW I S-98 FOR A MAUSER RIFLE

This is a very nice example of a pre WW I S-98 bayonet which would have been mounted on a Mauser rifle.

The bayonet measures 26” from the tip of the wooden handle to the tip of the leather scabbard.

A leather scabbard was more practical prior to the war and was replaced with a metal scabbard that would stand up better to the elements.

The blade measures 21” in length. On the blade there are light spots of surface rust. These are minimal and treatment with gun oil will smooth out much of that. The cross guard also shows light traces of surface rust. This can also be seen on the four screws and bolts on the handle. Speaking of the cross guard this is also a difference from the bulk of the war time bayonets which did not have this feature.

There are no manufacturer or unit markings on the blade.

The leather scabbard is in excellent condition. It is supple with no mars to its surface. The metal fitting at the shows some surface rust.

This is a consignment item.
