GERMANY – POSTCARD – S.M.S. SCHARNHORST – S.M.S. GNEISENAU – KANONENBOOT S.M.S. ZÉLÉC – NAVY
In August 1914 the German East Asian Squadron under Vizeadmiral Graf von Spee abandoned their port in China and sailed Eastward across the Pacific to their fate in the Battle of Falkland Islands.
This postcard features the two heavy cruisers S.M.S. Scharnhorst and S.M.S. Gneisenau along with Kanonenboot S.M.S. Zéléc. These two ships were among the most famous in the German Navy. Both were sunk at the Battle of Falkland Islands with von Spee and his two young sons among the dead who went down with their ships. They are seen steaming near Tahiti not long after they had begun their voyage.
The postcard is in mint condition and has never been mailed.
