GERMANY – SANKE CARD – RITTMEISTER MANFRED FREIHERR VON RICHTHOFEN – NR 532
This is Sanke card Nr 532 of Rittmeister Freiherr von Richthofen. Manfred Von Richthofen is arguably the most famous of air aces. While many German pilots exceeded his score none have the overall brilliance that he did.
Selected by Oswald Boelcke to join his Jasta 2 von Richthofen showed immediate promise and by January 1917 he had received the Pour le Mérite and was given command of Jasta 11. Ultimately he was given command of the first Jagdgeschwader, Jagdgeschwader I (JG 1) which consisted of four Jastas and became the “Flying Circus.”
Von Richthofen would be killed on 21 April 1918 with a total score of eighty confirmed victories. His legend only increased after his death.
The card on offer shows Von Richthofen from the waist up. He is wearing his well known Ulanka, the tunic worn by Uhlans. Pinned to his left breast is the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class and the Prussian Army Pilot Badge. At his throat is the Pour le Mérite.
Written in pen above his head is a cross with the date of his death, 28 April 1918 and Somme. To the left of his head is 80 the number of his air victories. This postcard has never been mailed.
Generally we sell this card for $125.00-$135.00 (When we can even get them.) but we offer this at a very favorable price.
