GERMANY – SCHIRMMÜTZE – OFFICER – KAISERLICHE MARINE FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE
It has been ages since we have been able to offer you an Imperial German Navy officer schirmmütze. And today we offer one that IS very special. In fact I have only seen ONE other example and it was in much poorer condition than our offering. It is an officer schirmmütze for use in overseas service. This would have been used in tropical possessions like China, Africa, the South Seas, etc.
The cap is a cream or sand colored cloth, more like a tight twill, not the wool that we would often see in a Navy officer visor cap. In the center, we see a high quality gold bullion Navy officer device. Unlike the typical Navy cloth kokarde, we see a metal example might you like see on an Army officer schirmmütze. There is a black leather chin strap secured by two small gold toned Navy buttons. On the strap there is a black buckle and a stop button which assists in the adjustment of the chin strap. There is evidence of light moth tracking on the visor and the top. These are not full moth nips but rather blooms.
Turning to the interior, we see a light brown leather sweatband to which is attached a cream colored silk liner. As good as the condition of the exterior is, the condition of the interior is even better.
Again I cannot stress too much how rare this schirmmütze is. Whether you are a headdress or Kaiserliche Marine collector, this cap will be a highlight of your collection!
