GERMANY – SHOULDER STRAP – LUFTSCHIFFER BATAILLONE NR 1 – FELDGRAU
This is a single shoulder strap which would have been worn on a tunic for Luftschiffer Bataillone Nr 1. This bataillone was the first of the Luftschiffer Battailones which were formed. This took place in 1884 and the bataillone was garrisoned in Berlin and held Garde status. [PLEASE NOTE: Luftschiffer units fielded anything from zeppelins (used by the Army until circa 1917, when all their equipment and crews were turned over to the Navy) to balloons, and so on]. The shoulder strap is feldgrau material and displays a stylized “L” above the number “1,” both embroidered in red.
The shoulder strap’s appearance indicates it was NEVER attached to a tunic. Its reverse displays the barest hint of moth nip activity. It definitely has some honest age to it.
