This is a wonderful Japanese-produced album of the type greatly prized by German sailors, soldiers, etc., who passed through Japan while serving in China. Albums such as these also might have been purchased by German sailors in the merchant marine. These albums were beautifully hand produced, using rich, lacquered wood and the best of other materials to complete them. This example has black lacquered covers. The front cover sports a silver oriental dragon in its center. The image is trimmed in a thin, upraised, silver frame. Working outward from the thin silver frame, we find a larger, brown-lacquered, wooden frame. On that is an ornate silver series of designs. The back cover is unadorned black lacquer.
Inside the album is the front and back covers richly hand painted on silk. The front cover features three birds on the ground (some sort of cranes, I believe). The back cover features a small Japanese village on the water. Structures appear on both sides of the water. What appear to be sails are in the distance, perhaps those of fishing boats.
Inside the album, we see nine double-sided pages. Each page has a silk surface that displays colorfully painted scenes of Japan. Each side of the page has two cutout areas where photos or even postcards can be inserted. Directly below each of these cutouts, we see a smaller box where the subject can be described, if so desired. With the double sided pages, a total of thirty-six open spaces are available for photographs or postcards.
The two wooden covers and the nine double-sided pages are attached to a leatherette spine. The spine has partially separated from the front cover. Proper care should be exhibited when handing the album.
The album has a lot of potential to hold your prized photographs, cabinet photographs, CdV’s or postcards. Whether you are going to use it for colonial material or other Imperial German images, it will result in an attractive display. For that matter, the album would be superb for a scrap booker!

This is an original photograph that measures 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2.” It depicts the pre WW I zeppelin “Sachsen.” She was placed into service in May 1913. Before the beginning of WW I, she transported nearly 10,000 people. When the war began, she was placed in the Army’s service and became known as the LZ 17. She participated in bombing raids and retired from service in 1916. This shot shows the zeppelin’s stern. She is still in her hanger, but appears to being pulled out. Men are pulling on lines and others are directing the action.

Massive, truly magnificent, artistically hand carved wooden Hapsburg Eagle. It has been years since we have offered a sophisticated example of German Imperial Period woodcarving. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest we have ever offered. During the Imperial Period, most of Europe’s finest hand woodcarving came from Germany and Austria. [The tradition is still practiced today primarily in Southern Germany (the Black Forest and Bavaria) and Northern Austria (the Tyrol)]. I cannot say with certainty whether our example originated in Austria or Germany, although it was done to commemorate Austria’s Hapsburg Empire. I date this fine example from 1875 up through 1918, when the Great War’s end resulted in the demise of Germany and Austria’s empires….
AUSTRIA – FRAME – HAND CARVED WOOD – HAPSBURG EAGLE

The stunning Eagle measures 2″ x 21″ x 26,” and weighs a whopping 8 lbs. 4 oz. The carving is quite intricate, with exquisite detailing to its various feathers. The top crown has movement in it forwards and backwards, almost as though it is articulated. In the center of the Eagle’s chest is a glass-covered frame that measures 4 ½” x 6″ x 2,” and features a cabinet photograph of Kaiser Franz Josef of Austria with a reproduction signature.
The reverse features three metal rings that form its hanger system. A very old cord is strung between them that once served as the actual hanger so it could be hung on a wall. I have waited many years for a large and exceptional carving to come along. It would handsomely set off a large wall in your home. [Additional shipping will be required for this item due to its weight and size].
