Today we are offering a massive, truly magnificent, artistically hand carved wooden Hapsburg Eagle. It has been years since we have offered a sophisticated example of German Imperial Period woodcarving. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest we have ever offered. During the Imperial Period, most of Europe’s finest hand woodcarving came from Germany and Austria. [The tradition is still practiced today primarily in Southern Germany (the Black Forest and Bavaria) and Northern Austria (the Tyrol)]. I cannot say with certainty whether our example originated in Austria or Germany, although it was done to commemorate Austria’s Hapsburg Empire. I date this fine example from 1875 up through 1918, when the Great War’s end resulted in the demise of Germany and Austria’s empires.
The stunning Eagle measures 2″ x 21″ x 26,” and weighs a whopping 8 lbs. 4 oz. The carving is quite intricate, with exquisite detailing to its various feathers. The top crown has movement in it forwards and backwards, almost as though it is articulated. In the center of the Eagle’s chest is a glass-covered frame that measures 4 ½” x 6″ x 2,” and features a cabinet photograph of Kaiser Franz Josef of Austria with a reproduction signature.
The reverse features three metal rings that form its hanger system. A very old cord is strung between them that once served as the actual hanger so it could be hung on a wall. I have waited many years for a large and exceptional carving to come along. It would handsomely set off a large wall in your home. [Additional shipping will be required for this item due to its weight and size].

Before the beginning of WW I, she transported nearly 10,000 people. When the war began, she was placed in the Army’s service and became known as the LZ 17. She participated in bombing raids and retired from service in 1916. In the photograph one is looking up and under the zeppelin. The shot was taken of the zeppelin’s forward portion. One of the two gondolas can be seen.

This is one of the ever-popular albums acquired by German sailors and colonial soldiers while they traveled in Japan and China during Germany’s colonial occupation of China. The album features a combination of beautifully-lacquered woods on the front and back covers. The front cover shows a handsome combination of hand-painted oriental scenes, including a village, mountains, flowers and a rickshaw with driver and passenger. (In fact, their faces are small bits of ivory fashioned into heads, then painted). The back cover is not as intricate and only displays a flower design. The two covers are mounted to a leather spine that makes it look book-like.
Inside the album we see eighteen double-sided pages, which could hold thirty-six conventionally sized CdV’s. These pages are really amazing. Each is covered in silk, on which scenes of nature and the countryside are painted. Several different designs are used, so you are not seeing the same scene over and over. Ten CdV’s are already mounted in the album. One features a soldier, while the others show 19th Century females. One can easily remove them and add CdV’s that are of more interest. Check our CdV section on our “Original Photograph” Page and we will offer you a dandy discount on any that you would like to include!
