NPG POSTCARD Nr 6004 – PLM WINNER OSWALD BOELCKE – MAX IMMELMANN

SKU: 42-87

$55.00

This postcard, NPG Postcard Nr 6004, shows the first two German pilots to be awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916. On the left is Max Immelmann and on the right is Oswald Boelcke. Legend has it that the PLM’s popular nickname, the “Blue Max,” comes from Immelmann. Neither man lived to see the dawn of 1917. Immelmann was killed in June (with seventeen confirmed victories) and Boelcke in October due a midair collision with one of his own pilots (he had forty confirmed victories). This is a “mourning card” as it is bordered in black. So, it was produced after late October 1916. It was not mailed.
