This is a postcard of the heavy cruiser Von der Tann. The Von der Tann was commissioned in 1910 and was the lead ship of her class. She was the flagship of Reconnaissance Group Nr 1 (1. Aufklärungsgruppe). She served in both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and participated in virtually all of WW I’s naval battles and actions. At the Battle of Jutland (Skagerrakschlacht), she again led 1. Aufklärungsgruppe, suffering several hits, many fatalities and many wounded sailors. She was scuttled at Scapa Flow by her crew in 1919. The postcard shows her in profile. It was never mailed.
