This is a framed photograph of the funeral cortege of Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The Graf founded airships used in Germany before WW I. During WW I his ships were used for the bombing of England and Belgium. The procession follows the casket and is led by König Wilhelm II of Württemberg. The casket has crossed swords and the Graf’s tschapka. He held the rank of general of cavalry in the army. The framed photograph measures 10″ x 13.” The photo within measures 8 3/4″ x 11 3/4.” Below the photograph is another smaller window with printed information about the funeral and the date.

Before the beginning of WW I, she transported nearly 10,000 people. When the war began, she was placed in the Army’s service and became known as the LZ 17. She participated in bombing raids and retired from service in 1916. She is shown just a few feet off the ground, with a large number of people around her.

I am not quite sure what was the use for this oversized Iron Cross, although it appears to be of a patriotic nature. Having said that, it is quite large, measuring 3″ x 2 e.” It is about the size of a Grand Cross. It is stamped and has a loop at the top where it could have been worn as a pendant. However, this is huge! It would have taken up a LOT of space under a lady’s neck. It is stamped and there is a wreath of leaves that connects the arms of the cross. It is more likely that it was used as a wall decoration. This is definitely a different kind of item!
