This is one of the ever-popular postcards produced by Willi Sanke, Sanke Card Nr 384 of Leutnant Wilhelm Frankl. Frankl (1893-1917) was Jasta 4’s commander and a Pour le Mérite winner with a total of twenty confirmed victories at the time of his April 1917 death. He was awarded the PLM in 1916 after he had achieved eight victories. When the Luftwaffe was formed under Hermann Göring in the 1930’s, Frankl was largely forgotten due to his Jewish heritage. He was left out of most books about PLM-winners and aces. When he was referred to at all, it was as “The Jew with the Blue Max.”
Sanke Card Nr 384 shows him seated in a chair outdoors. His hands are folded in his lap. He wears his PLM around his neck. His 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class and Prussian Pilot Badge appear on his left breast. The card’s reverse shows no writing. It was never mailed.
