This is Sanke Card Nr 512, featuring Karl Emil Schäfer. Schäfer was one of Jasta 11’s early heroes, along with Manfred von Richthofen, Lothar von Richthofen, Karl Wolff, and Karl Allmenröder. Schäfer joined Jasta 11 in February 1917. Schäefer had a spectacular record. By the end of “Bloody April” 1917, he had twenty-three confirmed victories and his PLM. In late April he was transferred to Jasta 28 as its Jastaführer. He was killed in early June 1917, with a total of thirty victories. He was the first of the early Jasta 11 lads to die in combat. Only one of Jasta 11’s original stars survived WW I, Lothar von Richthofen. On this Sanke Card Schäfer is standing by an airplane with only a 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class on his tunic. It has been removed from a photo album.
