Königlich Sächsisches Ulanen-Regiment Nr. 21 „Kaiser Wilhelm II., König von Preußen“ (3rd Royal Saxon Uhlan Regiment No. 21 “Kaiser Wilhelm II, King of Prussia”). The crowned cypher and the absence of rank stars identify the wearer as a Leutnant (second lieutenant).

The board is built in the Imperial subaltern officer pattern: doubled flat-braided cord over a wool underlay, here in a dark bullion interwoven with the green silk fleck of Royal Saxon manufacture. At the center sits a gilt device comprising an Imperial crown above an interlaced “W II” cypher, the personal cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II as Regimentschef. The underlay is the dark blue facing color. The reverse retains the original wool backing with slip-on tongue and collector’s notation; light moth nips are present.

The regiment was newly raised in 1905 on the Zeithain training ground, and on 25 October 1905 King Friedrich August III named Kaiser Wilhelm II as its Regimentschef, the regiment thereafter bearing his name. It formed part of the Saxon cavalry establishment within the XIX (2nd Royal Saxon) Army Corps and served on both the Western and Eastern Fronts during the First World War. The Imperial crown over the “W II” cypher directly reflects the Kaiser’s position as honorary chief.

The green fleck confirms Saxon manufacture; the Imperial-crowned “W II” cypher identifies the chief as Kaiser Wilhelm II and ties the board to UlR 21, the Saxon regiment that bore his name; the unstarred field establishes the rank of Leutnant.

Condition is good. The dark bullion braid is intact with the green fleck visible; some fraying and pile loss are present at the lower edge, and the reverse shows scattered moth nips consistent with age. The gilt crown-and-cypher device is complete and well struck. The underlay is sound.

An officer’s board carrying the Imperial-crowned cypher of Wilhelm II, on a Saxon-manufactured base, links two distinct collecting threads, the Saxon cavalry and the Kaiser’s own chiefships, in a single piece. Boards of this regiment are infrequently encountered, and the clear chief’s cypher gives it strong appeal to cavalry and royalty collectors.

https://derrittmeister.com/products/saxon-hussar-hr-18-konig-albert-officer-shoulder-board-leutnant-cypher-copy
