Honoring History: The Origin of Our Name

Der Rittmeister Militaria takes its name from one of the most legendary figures of World War I: Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron.” A former Uhlan cavalry officer, von Richthofen retained the title “Rittmeister” (Captain of the Horse) even after becoming Germany’s most decorated ace pilot with 80 confirmed victories.

We honor his legacy through our dedication to preserving original Imperial German artifacts with accuracy, respect, and integrity.

From Collector to Dealer: The Evolution of Der Rittmeister

Founded by the Greenfield family in 1996, Der Rittmeister Militaria began as a personal passion inspired by the film The Blue Max. What started as a private collection soon became one of the earliest online businesses focused exclusively on Imperial German militaria.

With nearly three decades of expertise, we’ve built a reputation for offering museum-quality pieces backed by thorough research, global sourcing, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity.

A Family Legacy: Three Generations Preserving the Past

Founded in 1996, Der Rittmeister Militaria has remained under the care of the Greenfield family, who continue to play a central role in managing and growing the company. Today, the next generation has joined the mission: Lillian leads our digital evolution through her firm, MarkItUp, modernizing the platform while preserving the essence of our legacy. Der Rittmeister remains a family-run endeavor, committed to serving serious collectors and curious newcomers alike.
