This is a historically significant flatback variation of the Iron Cross 2nd Class from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Struck in bronze and finely finished in a gold-tone wash, the front displays the classic Imperial crown above the intertwined “FF” cypher (Friedrich Franz), with the date “1870” boldly cast at the bottom arm. The detailing is crisp, with subtle period wear indicative of authentic field use.
Of special note is the engraved reverse—an uncommon and highly desirable feature. Scratched into the surface in a period hand is what appears to be the soldier's name, possibly “R. BLOCK” or “BLOCKASIER,” though wear has obscured the lower portion. Personalizations like this transform this from a medal into a personal artifact, offering a direct connection to the soldier who carried it.
The reverse also features a long straight pin back, fully intact and functional. This variant lacks the iron core and instead is solid, which is typical of non-combatant or commemorative issues made for high-ranking officers or ceremonial wear.
Condition:
Very good overall. The obverse retains its gold-bronze tone with minor age patina. The reverse shows engraving wear but remains legible under close inspection. The pin is firm and unbent. Light signs of age consistent with a 150+ year-old medal.
Historical Relevance:
Awarded for acts of bravery and leadership during the Franco-Prussian War, this Iron Cross is tied to the conflict that ultimately unified Germany under Prussian leadership. The engraving suggests a unique provenance, perhaps traceable with further research.
Display Suggestions:
This piece pairs well with Franco-Prussian militaria or could serve as a focal point in any early Imperial German medal grouping. Displaying it with a soldier’s photo or mounted behind glass would preserve its engraving and invite historical curiosity.
