A striking antique German beer stein featuring deeply embossed relief scenes and a domed pewter lid, likely produced by the renowned Steinzeugfabrik Reinhold Merkelbach in the late 19th or early 20th century. The body of the stein is crafted from glazed stoneware with a pale cream base and warm caramel-toned highlights that emphasize the intricate details.
One panel displays a classical mythological scene, possibly representing allegories of justice and valor, with finely rendered human and animal figures, including a scale, sword, and noble robes—likely evoking ancient Roman or Germanic influences. The lower portion of the body is adorned with three medallions depicting birds and other natural motifs in contrasting green-black glaze.
The handle is sculpted in a robust form and affixed with a pewter thumb-lift and lid, which remains tightly attached and functional. The base is clearly marked “Made in Germany” along with the manufacturer’s hallmark and model number, providing traceable authenticity.
Condition: Very good overall. The ceramic body is solid with no visible cracks or structural issues. Minor wear to the glaze and light patina on the pewter lid are consistent with age.
Capacity: Approximately 0.5L
Height: 10.25 in. (26 cm)
Historical context: Steins such as this were often produced for export markets and local use by guilds and military officers. The allegorical motifs were intended to convey virtue, strength, and discipline—making it a statement piece for collectors of both fine stoneware and German Imperial decorative arts.
Display suggestions: This stein makes a handsome addition to any curio cabinet, home bar, or collector’s wall shelf. Pairs beautifully with other early 20th-century German ceramics or militaria.
