This is a fine example of an Austro-Hungarian patriotic brooch from the late 19th century into World War I, crafted in gilt metal and enamel. The obverse features the Imperial double-headed eagle of Austria-Hungary, crowned and displaying the national shield at its breast. The design is set against a guilloché white enamel background within a gilt border, creating a striking contrast that reflects the quality of manufacture.

These patriotic pieces were privately purchased items, worn most often by women—wives, mothers, or sisters of soldiers—to demonstrate loyalty to the Dual Monarchy and solidarity with family members serving in the armed forces. Unlike official decorations, they served as visible symbols of devotion to the Emperor and Empire during wartime.

The reverse retains its original gilt finish with a simple period pin-back fastening, fully functional. The enamel remains intact, which is uncommon, as most surviving examples show losses or cracks. Light wear is present consistent with age, but overall this brooch remains in excellent collectible condition.

Dimensions: Approximately 25 mm diameter.

Condition: Enamel intact, bright gilding, fully original and unaltered, with working pin hardware.

Provenance: From a European collection.
