This charming patriotic bow is a fine surviving example of Austro-Hungarian decorative wear from the late Imperial era, most likely dating to the First World War period. Designed to be worn on the lapel, it combines national colors with the Imperial eagle emblem, serving as both a fashion accessory and a subtle display of loyalty to the Habsburg Monarchy.

The bow is constructed from a bright red and white moiré silk ribbon—Austria’s national colors—fashioned into a neat horizontal bow with two long tails. At its center is a finely detailed gilt metal double-headed eagle, the Imperial emblem of Austria-Hungary, each head crowned and the chest bearing a red shield with a white cross (symbol of the Austrian branch of the Order of Leopold and, more broadly, the heraldry of Austria proper). The eagle is highlighted with enameled elements in red, white, and deep blue at the crown.

The reverse features a functional pin-back attachment, with the hardware stamped “ELADA”, a known Austrian jewelry and accessory maker active in the early 20th century. The fastening mechanism remains fully intact. The ribbon shows only light age toning, some fraying at the lower edges of the tails, and a small dark spot on the left wing side—minor imperfections that speak to its originality and period use.

Historical Context:
Patriotic bows such as this were often worn during wartime rallies, public appearances, and on national holidays to express support for the Empire’s military and monarchy. Civilian versions, like this example, were purchased by the public and worn prominently on coats or blouses. The double-headed eagle device clearly links this piece to the Austro-Hungarian state rather than to a specific regiment, making it a versatile and representative patriotic token.

Condition:
Excellent for its age. Original silk retains much of its sheen. Gilt eagle device shows crisp detail with minimal wear. Original period pin and clasp fully operational.

Provenance:
Acquired from a European collection specializing in Austro-Hungarian militaria and patriotic artifacts.

Price Justification:
Surviving Austro-Hungarian patriotic ribbons with intact enamel devices and original fastenings are increasingly scarce. This example combines strong colors, a well-detailed eagle, and manufacturer-marked hardware, making it desirable for both militaria and historical costume collectors.
