Oswald Boelcke was a pivotal figure in aviation history, particularly during World War I. Born in 1891, Boelcke is widely regarded as the father of air combat, thanks to his development of the “Boelcke Dicta,” a set of tactical rules for air fighting that laid the foundation for modern aerial warfare. He served as a pioneer in the German Air Service, flying the Fokker Eindecker alongside Max Immelmann in early 1915. Both aviators were instrumental in shifting the use of aircraft from reconnaissance to active combat roles, leading to their early success and recognition.

Boelcke was awarded the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military honor, in January 1916, after achieving eight confirmed aerial victories. His legacy was further cemented by his role in forming and leading Jagdstaffel 2 (Jasta 2), where he handpicked and mentored some of the most renowned pilots of the war, including Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.

This Sanke Card, numbered 363, is one of the earliest cards produced in Boelcke's honor and is notable for its depiction of him with three different ranks: Leutnant, Oberleutnant, and Hauptmann. The card shows Boelcke in a studio photograph, standing with his right hand on his hip, a pose that became synonymous with his stoic and determined character. He is dressed in his military uniform, adorned with the Pour le Mérite at his throat, the Prussian Pilot badge, the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class, and a ribbon bar featuring the crossed swords of the Knight's Cross with Swords of the Hohenzollern House Order.

The autograph on this card, signed "Boelcke" in black ink, has been authenticated based on comparisons with other known examples of his signature. The signature is clear, though slightly light, and is positioned across the lower part of his tunic. The card itself is in excellent condition, with the characteristic silver oxide “frame” visible, a common feature of early Sanke Cards.
