Bavaria – Enlisted Man’s White Leather Parade Belt and Buckle

This is an Imperial German Kingdom of Bavaria enlisted man’s white leather parade belt complete with its brass box buckle. The configuration dates from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century and represents the distinctive state-specific equipment worn by Bavarian troops during the German Imperial era.

The buckle consists of a rectangular brass plate fitted with an applied white-metal circular medallion. At its center is the Bavarian royal crown, surrounded by a decorative wreath and the raised motto “IN TREUE FEST,” translated as “Steadfast in Loyalty.” This traditional Bavarian motto appeared on the insignia and military equipment of the kingdom and immediately distinguishes the buckle from its Prussian “GOTT MIT UNS” counterpart.

The contrasting brass and white-metal construction is characteristic of Imperial-era enlisted buckles intended for dress and parade wear. The central device remains well defined, with clear crown detail, legible lettering, and a pleasing contrast between the naturally aged metals.

The belt is constructed from substantial leather with a white exterior finish appropriate for ceremonial and parade dress. The reverse retains its pale unfinished surface, buckle attachment hardware, protective pad, and brown leather adjustment section. Eight brass-rimmed adjustment positions remain visible at the end of the belt. The buckle’s rear catch, sliding keeper, and retaining fittings appear complete.

Bavaria maintained its own military traditions, uniforms, and insignia after joining the German Empire in 1871. State-specific equipment such as this belt continued to identify Bavarian soldiers within the larger Imperial German Army until the end of the monarchy in 1918. A complete belt and buckle combination provides a useful display piece alongside a Bavarian Pickelhaube, Waffenrock, or other Imperial uniform equipment.

Condition is good for its age, with substantial honest wear from use and storage. The brass buckle displays darkening, scattered spotting, scratches, and natural patina. The white-metal medallion shows age toning but retains strong relief and clearly legible decoration. The leather remains complete but exhibits scuffing, surface cracking, discoloration, and areas of flaking and loss to the white finish. The brown adjustment section shows heavier abrasion and finish loss around the brass-rimmed holes. No maker or unit markings are visible. Because of the age and present condition of the leather, careful handling is recommended.
