Bavaria – Munich Infantry Reservist Stein Souvenir, 1903–1905

This German regimental souvenir stein is decorated in the traditional style of an Imperial-era Reservistenkrug. Its white glazed porcelain body features colorful military scenes, Bavarian heraldry, regimental sentiments and burgundy accent bands.

The inscription beneath the lid reads “Infanterie Rgt. 11. Comp. 1903/05 · München,” translating as “Infantry Regiment, 11th Company, 1903–1905, Munich.” The foot is personalized “Feldw. Johann Engerer,” identifying Feldwebel Johann Engerer.

The central decoration incorporates the crowned Bavarian arms, blue-and-white lozenges, military flags, a heraldic lion and a barracks building. Surrounding scenes humorously portray different stages of a soldier’s experience, including “Die Rekrutenzeit” (The Recruit Period), “Dienstzeit” (Service Time), “Im Arrest” (Under Arrest) and “Erinnerung” (Remembrance). Additional German verses and farewell sentiments complete the traditional military theme.

An ornate metal lid is engraved with floral scrollwork and fitted with a rampant-lion thumb lift. The sculptural finial depicts a standing armed figure accompanied by a lion. When held toward a light source, the translucent porcelain base reveals a lithophane showing a man and woman in a domestic or farewell scene.

The stein remains attractive and displayable, with its handle, lid, hinge, thumb lift and finial intact. The porcelain exhibits scattered discoloration, minor surface wear and light rubbing consistent with handling and display. The metal fittings retain an aged, darkened patina with normal surface wear. No manufacturer’s mark is visible.
