This is an excellent example of a Bavarian Chevauleger officer’s Schirmmütze from the late 19th to early 20th century. The Chevauleger regiments were light cavalry units in the Bavarian army, known for reconnaissance and ceremonial duties.

Historical Context:

  • The Chevauleger regiments, originally light cavalry, played a significant role in the Bavarian military. During the Napoleonic era, these regiments were primarily involved in reconnaissance, skirmishing, and other light cavalry duties. By the time of the German Empire and World War I, they were primarily ceremonial.

Features:

  • Color Scheme: The cap features a dark green or black wool top, paired with a distinct red band that wraps around the base of the crown, which was typical for Bavarian military officers. This color combination is reflective of the Chevauleger regiments.

  • Piping: The cap includes red piping along the top edge, further accentuating its distinctive look, common for Bavarian officer headgear during the period.

  • Kokarden: The state and Reich kokarden are both present. The Bavarian cockade includes silver detailing with blue and white in the center, representing Bavaria's national colors, while the Reich cockade features black, white, and red, symbolizing the German Empire.

Interior:

  • Maker's Mark: The interior of the cap bears the manufacturer’s stamp “M. Heppel, München,” a well-known Bavarian outfitter that produced military uniforms and caps during the period. The red silk liner is somewhat worn but retains much of its original integrity, adding to the cap’s authenticity.

  • Sweatband: The black leather sweatband is largely intact, showing some minor wear consistent with age but in overall good condition.

Condition:

  • Exterior: The cap is in very fine condition with only minor wear visible on the wool fabric. There are some minor age-related creases and cracks on the leather visor, which is to be expected for an item of this vintage.

  • Interior: The interior lining shows some minor wear and discoloration due to age but remains largely intact. The maker’s stamp is still legible despite some fading.

Price:

Given its historical significance, condition, and maker, this Bavarian Chevauleger officer’s Schirmmütze is valued at 1495.00. Caps in similar condition from this period, especially with intact cockades and well-preserved interiors, are highly sought after by collectors of Imperial German militaria.
