This is an exceptional original Bavarian helmet wappen (front plate), featuring the iconic coat of arms of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Cast in fine brass and richly detailed, the emblem showcases the crowned Bavarian shield supported by two rampant lions, with the state motto “In Treue Fest” (“Steadfast in Loyalty”) displayed across an ornate scroll at the base. The design is dominated by a large royal crown atop the shield, underscoring the region’s status as a kingdom within the German Empire from 1806 to 1918.
This specific type of wappen was mounted on the pickelhaube of Bavarian line infantry, artillery, and support troops. Unlike the Prussian eagle seen on most German helmets, Bavaria maintained its own heraldic traditions and was the only German state allowed to retain its unique insignia throughout the Imperial period.
On the reverse, original threaded posts remain affixed, allowing for reattachment to a helmet if desired. Some oxidation is visible near the posts — a common and expected patina for brass hardware of this age — and there is minor wear to the finish consistent with field or storage use. The brass has not been polished and retains a pleasing, warm age tone.
This wappen is highly desirable not only for collectors of German militaria, but also for those interested in Bavarian heraldry, Imperial German history, or the regional distinctions within the Kaiserreich's armed forces.
