Bavarian Military Merit Cross, 2nd Class with Swords (MVK2) – WWI Enamel Merit Award
A beautiful example of Bavarian craftsmanship, the Military Merit Cross was the "Iron Cross of Bavaria." This 2nd Class version is highly coveted by collectors for its multi-piece construction and the striking contrast between the silvered arms and the vibrant blue-and-white enamel centers. It represents a significant act of bravery or meritorious leadership by a Bavarian soldier during the Great War.
The Militär-Verdienstkreuz was reorganized in 1913 into three classes. The 2nd Class (silver-toned) was typically awarded to senior NCOs (Sergeants and Feldwebels). The addition of the Swords indicates a combat award. Because Bavaria maintained its own army independent of the Prussian system during WWI, this was the highest award a Bavarian NCO could receive from his own King (Ludwig III) for service in the field.
- The Cross: A cross pattée in silvered tombac (or silver). The arms feature a distinct "flamed" or "rayed" texture that catches the light beautifully.
- The Swords: Two crossed swords are mounted above the cross, integrated into the suspension ring, signifying combatant status.
- The Obverse (Front): Features a central circular medallion with a black enamel "L" (for King Ludwig) on a gold-toned background, surrounded by a blue enamel ring with the white-lettered motto: "MERENTI" (To the Meritorious).
- The Reverse (Back): The central medallion features the Bavarian Lion and the institution date "1866" on a blue enamel ring.
- The Ribbon: Suspended from the standard Bavarian Combatant Ribbon: white with blue edges and thin black stripes (the Kriegsband).
The cross is in superb condition. The enamel is flawless—there are no cracks or "chips" in the blue Merenti ring or the central medallions, which is the most critical factor for Bavarian orders. The silvering on the "rayed" arms remains bright with a light, even patina. The swords are straight and the suspension is secure.
