This is an original Kingdom of Bavaria Military Merit Cross (Militär-Verdienstkreuz) with swords, correctly identified and attributable to the Bavarian award system established in 1866. The piece is struck in bronze, displaying the characteristic four-armed cross with finely pebbled arms and sharp, angular terminals. Between the upper arms are crossed swords, indicating a wartime or combat-related award, properly suspended beneath the Bavarian royal crown. The crown shows strong definition with intact arches, beadwork, and cross finial. The integral suspension ring and crown-to-cross junction are period-correct and show no signs of later replacement. The medal is suspended from its original ribbon, white with narrow dark edge stripes, showing honest age toning, minor fraying, and period wear consistent with long-term storage.
The obverse medallion bears the crowned cipher of King Ludwig II within a circular band inscribed “MERENTI,” a defining feature of the Bavarian Military Merit Cross instituted during his reign. The reverse medallion displays the date “1866” within a laurel wreath, referencing the year of the order’s founding following Bavaria’s military reorganization after the Austro-Prussian War. The detailing on both medallions remains crisp, with only light high-point wear, confirming original striking rather than later reproduction. The swords are well-proportioned with visible grip fluting and correct blade geometry, firmly mounted and matching known period examples.
Historically, the Bavarian Military Merit Cross occupied a central position in Bavaria’s independent honors system within the German Empire. It was awarded to non-commissioned officers, enlisted men, and officials for bravery, merit, and distinguished military service. The addition of swords denoted service in wartime conditions and elevated the significance of the award considerably. During World War I, the Military Merit Cross with swords became one of the most commonly encountered Bavarian bravery awards, often awarded multiple times across the conflict as the class system expanded. Despite this, original, untouched examples with correct crowns, swords, and ribbons remain increasingly difficult to source, especially those retaining strong detail and original suspension components.
From a collector standpoint, this example represents a textbook, correctly assembled Bavarian Military Merit Cross with swords, free from the common issues seen in the market such as replaced ribbons, mismatched crowns, or later-added swords. The overall patina is even and attractive, with no evidence of cleaning or artificial aging. The medal presents exactly as expected for a genuine pre-WWI to early-WWI period award.
Condition is very good overall. The bronze shows uniform age toning with minor surface wear to high points, consistent with period handling. The crown and swords remain structurally sound with no bends or repairs. The ribbon shows age-related wear and slight staining but remains original and intact. No cracks, breaks, or modern alterations are observed.
