Prussian Officer’s Two-Piece Belt Buckle – Nickel-Silver with Crown and Wreath Design
This is a fine example of an Imperial Prussian officer’s two-piece belt buckle, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The buckle is executed in nickel-silver (German silver), which was the standard finish for officer equipment, providing both durability and a bright field appearance.
The obverse features the high-domed Hohenzollern crown, crisply struck and surrounded by a finely detailed laurel and oak leaf wreath. The crown type is distinctly Prussian, with its tall, narrow arches and orb at the crest, making it immediately recognizable when compared to the broader Wittelsbach form of Bavarian examples. The wreath’s depth and texture show quality die work, indicative of officer production.
The buckle retains its separate two-piece construction, with the round crowned medallion affixed to a flat mounting plate. The rear hardware is intact, including the soldered hook, guide bar, and clasp catch, showing expected service wear but no repairs or replacement. The attachment mechanism is sound and functional.
Measurements:
-
Diameter of roundel: approx. 48 mm
-
Material: Nickel-silver alloy
Condition:
The buckle displays honest field wear with light surface toning and patina consistent with age and use. Some darkening is present in the recessed areas of the wreath, which enhances detail. The reverse shows wear from belt leather but remains structurally strong. No cracks or major deformations are present.
Historical Notes:
Prussian officer buckles of this style were worn with the officer’s leather belt as part of dress and service uniforms. Unlike enlisted buckles, which bore the inscription “Gott mit uns”, officer versions carried only the crown and wreath motif, signaling both rank distinction and refinement. This specific form remained in use until the end of the Imperial era in 1918.
Provenance:
From a long-established German collection, recently consigned.
