This is a Black Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz) from World War I, featuring a screwback attachment—a less common variation compared to the more frequently encountered pin-back versions. This piece was awarded to soldiers wounded in combat once and was part of the German military's recognition system for personal injury suffered in battle.

The badge is oval-shaped, with a finely detailed M1916 Stahlhelm (steel helmet) resting above two crossed swords. The helmet bears a few impact points, adding to its authenticity. The entire design is enclosed within an oak leaf wreath, symbolizing strength and honor.

On the reverse, it features a screwback plate, clearly marked D.R.G.M. 653146, indicating a Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster (German Imperial Registered Design) number. This marking suggests a privately produced badge following government-approved specifications. The screwback mechanism was favored for its secure attachment, often used on overcoats or thick uniforms.

Historical Significance:

Instituted on March 3, 1918, the Wound Badge was awarded in three classes: Black (1 wound), Silver (3-4 wounds), and Gold (5+ wounds or severe injuries). These badges served as an honorable distinction for soldiers who had shed blood for the Kaiserreich. The black version was the most commonly awarded but is sought after by collectors in rare configurations, such as this screwback model.

Condition:

  • Front: Retains most of its black finish, with signs of wear on the high points of the helmet and wreath.
  • Reverse: Shows patina and oxidation, especially on the screwback plate.
  • Markings: Clearly stamped D.R.G.M. 653146.
  • Screwback Attachment: Fully functional, though some wear is visible on the thread.

Provenance & Rarity:

Screwback Wound Badges are considered rarer than standard pin-back versions, particularly those with D.R.G.M. markings. The 653146 registry number traces back to a manufacturer producing privately purchased awards for officers and enlisted men alike.

Display Suggestions:

This piece makes an excellent addition to any WWI Imperial German collection and displays well alongside other combat awards. It would fit perfectly in a shadow box display, medal bar arrangement, or an Imperial German uniform setup.
