This 1897 Kaiser Wilhelm I Centennial Medal was issued to commemorate the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888), the first Emperor of a unified Germany. Established by his grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II, this medal was awarded to veterans of the Wars of German Unification, including those who served in the 1864 Second Schleswig War, the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, and the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War.

The obverse features a detailed profile of Kaiser Wilhelm I, wearing a Pickelhaube helmet and military uniform. The surrounding inscription reads:
"WILHELM DER GROSSE DEUTSCHER KAISER KÖNIG VON PREUSSEN"
(“Wilhelm the Great, German Emperor, King of Prussia”).

The reverse bears the inscription:
"ZUM ANDENKEN AN DEN HUNDERTSTEN GEBURTSTAG DES GROSSEN KAISERS WILHELM I. 1797 – 22. MAERZ – 1897"
(“In memory of the 100th birthday of the great Kaiser Wilhelm I, 1797 – 22 March – 1897”).

Below this text is a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory, and an artistic rendering of Wilhelm’s tomb at Charlottenburg Palace.

Condition:

  • The medal is in good condition, exhibiting only mild patina consistent with age.
  • The original yellow ribbon remains intact, showing some creasing and minor fraying, but retaining its vibrant color.
  • All details on the medal remain sharp and legible, with only light wear.

Historical Context:

Wilhelm I was instrumental in the unification of Germany in 1871, alongside Otto von Bismarck, leading to the establishment of the German Empire. This commemorative medal was distributed to military veterans and officials in recognition of his legacy.

Provenance & Collectibility:

  • Officially awarded in 1897 under Wilhelm II’s rule.
  • Often found in veterans’ medal groups, making individual pieces like this scarce.
  • A desirable addition for collectors of Imperial German militaria.

Display Suggestions:

This medal presents well in a shadow box display, alongside other German unification-era medals. Given its historical significance, it is an excellent centerpiece for an Imperial German collection.
