This is an 1897 Commemorative Medal for the 100th Birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I, issued under Kaiser Wilhelm II to honor his grandfather, the first Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. The medal was awarded to military personnel and civilians alike in recognition of their service to the German Empire.

The obverse features a detailed right-facing profile of Kaiser Wilhelm I, wearing his iconic Pickelhaube helmet and military uniform. Surrounding the portrait, the inscription reads:
"WILHELM DER GROSSE DEUTSCHER KAISER KÖNIG VON PREUSSEN" (Wilhelm the Great, German Emperor, King of Prussia).

The reverse bears an elaborate inscription, "ZUM ANDENKEN AN DEN HUNDERTSTEN GEBURTSTAG DES GROSSEN KAISERS WILHELM I. 1797 - 22 MAERZ - 1897" (In memory of the 100th birthday of the great Emperor Wilhelm I, March 22, 1797 - 1897). Below the text, there is a detailed engraving of the imperial crown, a scepter, and a laurel wreath, symbolizing power and unity.

Condition

The medal is in fine condition, showing only minor signs of wear consistent with its age. The original golden-yellow bow ribbon is intact, displaying slight aging and fraying in some areas. The medal retains strong detailing in the relief work, particularly in the facial features of Wilhelm I and the ornate reverse design.

Historical Context

Wilhelm I was a pivotal figure in German unification, leading Prussia to victory in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and becoming the first Emperor of Germany upon the formation of the German Empire in 1871. This medal was issued during the reign of his grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II, to celebrate the centennial of Wilhelm I’s birth. It was widely distributed across the empire, making it one of the more recognizable Imperial German commemorative decorations.

Provenance & Collectibility

This medal is a must-have for collectors specializing in Imperial German militaria, Prussian history, and commemorative medals. While relatively common, examples with original ribbons in good condition remain desirable. It is an excellent display piece and a tangible piece of Germany’s imperial past.
