This is a scarce membership badge for the Deutscher Gebirgsverein (D.G.V.) – the German Alpine/Hiking Association – representing the Quedlinburg chapter and its surrounding area (Umgegend). Founded in the late 19th century, the D.G.V. promoted outdoor hiking, alpine exploration, and cultural preservation, often organized through local branches across Imperial and Weimar Germany. Quedlinburg, a historic town in Saxony-Anhalt with medieval roots, was a hub for cultural heritage and outdoor activity, making it a fitting seat for a local D.G.V. group.
The obverse design features a six-pointed star rendered in black enamel over a textured silver-gray field, with the central red enamel panel bearing the letters “D.G.V.” in gilt. Surrounding the star is a gilt-edged shield form, topped by a stylized city gate or castle crown motif. At the upper arc, in white enamel with gilt lettering, is the legend QUEDLINBURG U. UMGEBEND (“Quedlinburg and Surrounding Area”). The reverse retains its original flat-back construction, with a broken stickpin attachment – a reminder that these were typically worn on civilian lapels. The lower reverse bears a stamped maker’s mark, partially legible as C. F. Koch, Berlin W., a known German badge and medal manufacturer active during the Imperial and interwar periods.
Condition is very good for its age, with intact enamel showing only minimal age toning and light surface wear to the gilt frame. The stickpin has broken off at the base, though the badge retains its crisp detail and finish. Measuring approximately 27 mm high by 20 mm wide, it remains a fine example of a pre-1933 German civic and sporting organization badge, directly linked to a historic German city.
