General der Infanterie Curt von Morgen (1858-1928) led a fascinating and distinguished career, marked by his explorations and military accomplishments. In the 1890s and early 20th century, he was an explorer in Africa and the Middle East, founding the Kamerun Schutztruppe in Africa. With the outbreak of World War I, von Morgen commanded an Infanterie Division on the Eastern Front, participating in major German victories at Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes. Promoted to Generalleutnant, he was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in December 1914 and the Oak Leaves in November 1916. In November 1914, he assumed command of the I. Reserve Armeekorps, a position he held until the end of the war.

This NPG postcard, Nr 5280, shows von Morgen sitting behind a desk, signing papers. He is dressed in a litewka with the ribbon of the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class, indicating the photograph was taken prior to his award of the Pour le Mérite. His title and name appear at the top of the postcard, while his signature in black ink is prominently displayed in the lower left corner.
