Instituted by Duke Friedrich II of Anhalt on December 12, 1914, the Friedrich Cross (Friedrichkreuz) was awarded to both combatants and non-combatants for distinguished service during World War I. The decoration follows the form of the Iron Cross but bears distinctive Anhalt features.
This example is the non-combatant version, indicated by its original blue ribbon with two wide yellow edge stripes. The bronze Maltese cross displays on the obverse a central crowned "FA" (for Friedrich Anhalt) flanked by oak leaves, with the date "1914" on the lower arm. The reverse is inscribed Für Verdienst im Kriege (“For Merit in War”).
The decoration remains in very fine condition, with a pleasing patina to the bronze and crisp detail to the oak leaf clusters and crown. The ribbon retains its strong color with only minimal age toning.
Condition: Very Fine+; light wear consistent with age; ribbon intact and unfaded.
