This is a highly rare Navy Land Plane Pilot Badge dating back to World War I. These badges were issued to pilots of the Marine Jastas (naval fighter squadrons) who engaged in air combat over Flanders against British and French forces. The badge was first introduced in 1915, and by the war's end, two significant Navy Plane Geschwaders had been formed, playing a crucial role alongside their Army counterparts in aerial operations.

Obverse Features:

  • Central Design: An albatross in mid-flight soars beneath the radiant sun. Below, a detailed scene of a walled city by the sea reflects its naval association.
  • Surrounding Wreath: A combination of oak and laurel leaves, symbolizing strength and victory.
  • Crown: The scene is crowned with a prominent open Hohenzollern Crown, emphasizing Imperial Germany’s naval heritage.

Reverse Details:

  • Finely hand-engraved with specific markings:
    • 1*7
    • 1 M F F A
    • 1917
(Notable: The “1” includes a unique decorative extension on its top left side.)
  • Features a flat pin, characteristic of one-piece massive construction often seen in naval flight badges.

Condition:
The badge boasts a pleasing patina that highlights its age while retaining remarkable detail. Both the front and reverse remain well-preserved, with minor wear consistent with its history.

Historical Context:
Naval pilot badges such as this are particularly rare due to the smaller size of Germany’s naval aviation force compared to the Army Air Corps. Pilots who received this badge were often involved in critical operations over contested zones like the Flanders coast and demonstrated immense bravery in aerial combat.

Additional Notes:
This item is a consignment piece and represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a unique artifact from Imperial Germany’s aviation history.

Display Suggestions:

  • Pair with other WWI naval memorabilia, such as photographs of Marine Jastas or medals from naval units.
  • Ideal for museum-quality displays or personal collections centered on Imperial German aviation.
