The officer's stern countenance, formidable beard, and aged features suggest the likeness may be modeled after a historical figure from the Franco-Prussian War or early German Empire period. He is shown wearing multiple medal bars, including what appears to be the Iron Cross and various starburst orders.

His double-breasted, dark tunic features six buttons in the front, fringed shoulder epaulets with gold detail, and a distinctive red collar—the mark of general officer rank in the Imperial German Army.
