This striking piece of Imperial German wartime art is titled "Feldmorgane des Krieges" (“Mirage of the War Field”), rendered in a delicately hand-colored lithographic style and presented in its original wooden frame with vintage brown matting. The work features a bold depiction of an Imperial German eagle soaring across a stormy battlefield with the Brandenburg Gate faintly visible through the smoke and destruction in the background. The eagle clutches the Iron Cross in its talons, symbolizing valor and military honor.

To the lower right is a personal dedication that reads: "Meinem tapferen Vetter gewidmet von seiner Base Liesl." This translates to "Dedicated to my brave cousin by his cousin Liesl." Such inscriptions evoke the deeply personal and familial ties to the war effort and the patriotic spirit that permeated civilian and military life during the First World War.

The composition is framed with a decorative vine of oak leaves and ribbon, classic German patriotic symbolism evoking strength, sacrifice, and remembrance.

  • Condition: Very good overall. The print has been well-preserved under glass. No visible damage or fading to the artwork. The frame is original and solid, though minor wear is visible consistent with age. The mat has toned slightly with time.

  • Dimensions (framed): approx. 13 x 11 inches

  • Medium: Lithographic print with hand coloring, paper-mounted

  • Era: Likely WWI-era (c. 1914–1918)

  • Display Notes: A heartfelt, emotionally charged piece that tells the story of a family’s devotion to a soldier in service. Ideal for wall display among other WWI relics, personal militaria, or patriotic German memorabilia.

  • Collector Appeal: This piece carries a rare touch of humanity not often seen in militaria—a civilian woman’s personal tribute to a soldier during a time of great upheaval. An excellent addition for collectors focusing on WWI homefront materials, wartime correspondence, or German propaganda art.
