This is an outstanding example of a Framed Imperial German Vivat Ribbon, issued at the outset of World War I. Dated 4 August 1914, the piece commemorates Germany’s entry into the war and features a stirring patriotic design centered around Kaiser Wilhelm II, flanked by loyal soldiers answering his historic call: “Der Kaiser rief und alle alle kamen” ("The Kaiser called, and everyone came"). These ribbons, issued primarily between 1914 and 1916, were sold to raise money for the German Red Cross and war-related charities.
This particular ribbon is printed on fine ivory silk, measuring approximately 24 inches by 7 inches within a professional archival matte and gilt wooden frame. The scene is rendered in bold black print and features intricate linework depicting a unified, martial Germany. Above the Kaiser’s image reads “Gott schütze unsern Kaiser” ("God protect our Kaiser"). Below is the phrase “Zum Besten der vaterl. Krieger-Vereine Preußens. Verlag Amsler u. Ruthardt, Berlin”, identifying it as part of the official Vivat series issued by Berlin publishers.
Condition: The ribbon remains in excellent condition, with only very minor age toning visible near the edges — an expected and acceptable feature of original 1914 silk. The framing is tight and protective, with clear display glass. On the reverse, a sticker from Galerie of Art GmbH, Nottuln, confirms its European provenance and gallery handling. No foxing, tears, or separations are visible in the silk.
Historical Context & Display: Vivat ribbons were incredibly popular in wartime Germany and were typically collected in albums or displayed proudly in households as symbols of patriotic support. This example is especially significant due to the early-war date and focus on the Kaiser himself. The large, framed presentation makes it ideal for display in a WWI collection room, museum, or study, especially when paired with medals, wartime prints, or other Imperial German memorabilia.
Comparable Sales & Rarity: Vivat ribbons with early dates and strong imagery like this one tend to command premium prices. Unframed examples of this exact design have sold in the $175–$225 range, while professionally framed silk Vivats, particularly those tied to major historical dates such as the declaration of war, regularly reach $325–$450 depending on condition and framing quality.
This is a striking and historically rich display piece, perfect for collectors of Imperial German propaganda, WWI militaria, or wartime textiles.
